Good news for fans of over-the-top sci-fi! This sequel is quickly becoming popular on Netflix, unexpectedly reaching the #2 spot over the weekend despite its poor performance in theaters. While it didn’t quite beat out The Rip for the top position, it did knock Kidnapped further down the chart.
Two years after the events of the first film, M3GAN 2.0 finds Gemma (Allison Williams), the creator of the rogue A.I. doll, now a prominent author and advocate for A.I. regulation. Unbeknownst to her, the technology behind M3GAN has been stolen and used to build Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), a powerful, military-grade A.I. intended for espionage. However, Amelia quickly develops self-awareness and rebels against her human controllers. Desperate, Gemma decides the only way to stop Amelia is to bring M3GAN back to life, upgrading her with increased speed, strength, and deadliness.
Where Was the Disconnect Between the First and Second Movies?
Critics strongly disliked the movie, giving it a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They felt it failed to build on the themes of the first film, instead relying on predictable clichés and flashy visuals without a compelling story. Ultimately, M3GAN 2.0 came across as a collection of internet jokes and lacked genuine substance or scares, abandoning the horror elements altogether.
Film critic Matt Brunson gave the M3GAN sequel a lukewarm review, awarding it 2 out of 4 stars and comparing it unfavorably to Terminator 2, suggesting it heavily borrows—and clumsily so—from that film. Jeff Bleck of The Blu Spot concurred, stating that the sequel fails to recapture the enjoyable thrills and fun of the original, resulting in a surprisingly boring and drawn-out experience.
Despite initial criticism, the movie was surprisingly well-received by general audiences, earning an 81% rating on the Popcornmeter. One viewer commented that the film “knows exactly what it’s doing,” describing it as intentionally campy, self-aware, and simply fun – perfect for relaxing and enjoying. Another gave it 4 out of 5 stars, stating they didn’t understand the negative reviews and found it funny and entertaining with solid performances.
Whether you loved it or hated it, M3GAN 2.0 is a movie people are definitely talking about. Some think it’s a fun, over-the-top sequel, while others feel it lacks the substance of the first film. Either way, it’s been incredibly popular on Netflix, easily landing a spot in the Top 10.
