Anime films have been incredibly successful in theaters worldwide this year, and recent developments suggest they could also make a significant impact at the Academy Awards. This success is due to the anime industry’s growth and efforts to broaden the appeal of popular series. While films like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle have been huge box office hits, there was some concern whether they would receive the same level of praise from critics.
This year, the Academy Awards recognized 35 animated films as potential contenders for the Best Animated Film award. While this doesn’t guarantee a nomination, let alone a win, it’s an important step forward for these films, particularly anime, as it gives them a chance to reach a wider audience beyond their existing fanbase. Currently, these films are largely popular within a dedicated community.
Anime Films Eligible for Oscars in 2025

The Academy reports that 35 animated films are currently being considered for the Best Animated Feature Film award at the 98th Academy Awards. This includes five anime movies: Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, 100 Meters, and Scarlet. However, just being eligible doesn’t guarantee a nomination – these films still need to overcome some challenges to be among the final five nominees.
While the Animation Branch specifically votes for nominees, other Academy members can also participate if they meet a minimum viewing requirement. These animated films have the opportunity to be nominated in multiple categories, including Best Picture and International Feature Film, giving them several pathways to recognition. Although it’s possible for them to achieve significant success, it will be challenging given the competitive nature of the Academy Awards – that’s simply how the process works.
Does Anime Have a Chance at Winning the Oscar?

Anime movies have won the Best Animated Film Oscar before – in fact, The Boy and The Heron won recently – so it’s definitely possible for another one to win. However, action-packed ‘shonen’ anime films haven’t really been considered before. Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini is hoping to change that with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, and the company is fully committed to supporting the film’s Oscar campaign.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Purini praised the movie as ‘incredible,’ highlighting its animation, story, and overall quality. They believe fans deserve to see it recognized with awards, and they’re committed to supporting its consideration in all eligible categories. Whether Demon Slayer – or any animated film – will actually win remains to be seen.
