Gamers eagerly await The Game Awards (TGA) each year, hosted by Geoff Keighley, to see which games win in different categories, with the biggest prize being Game of the Year. However, it might surprise some to learn that a game has *already* been awarded Game of the Year – at the Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2025. Despite the year still being in progress, one game has already established itself as the top title of 2025.
Although it’s early to name a Game of the Year for 2025, most people won’t be surprised by the winner: *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33*. This hugely popular game from Sandfall Interactive truly deserves the title. In fact, it swept the awards, also winning Best RPG, Best PC/Console Game, and the People’s Choice award. The event itself was massive, with over 206,000 attendees, demonstrating how much this award is valued.
Winning Game of the Year is a huge achievement, but to win four awards in one night is exceptional. Very few games manage to do this – *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* is now among them, joining titles like *Astro Bot*, which also won four awards, including GOTY, at The Game Awards in 2024. While it’s still uncertain how Sandfall Interactive’s game will perform at this year’s TGA, its recent success at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2025 suggests it has a strong chance of repeating that performance.

This win is especially noteworthy considering how many incredible games are coming out in 2025. Six titles have already earned a “Must Play” badge with scores over 90 on Metacritic, including *Hades 2*, *Blue Prince*, *Split Fiction*, *Hollow Knight: Silksong*, *Donkey Kong Bananza*, and *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33*. Any of these could easily win Game of the Year at other award shows, and that’s before you even consider highly-rated games like *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach* or titles still scheduled for release later in the year.
Being named Game of the Year is a huge honor in the gaming world. While some people think it’s just a popularity contest – since voting often decides the winner – it still highlights how impressive a game truly is. *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* really stood out to players with its stunning graphics, fun gameplay, and compelling story. Many Game of the Year winners are strong in these areas, but a truly exceptional game masters all of them.
