I’m so excited to see the latest movie in this series absolutely crushing it on Netflix! Rani Mukerji is incredible – she’s really owned this role for the past ten years, and honestly, she’s changing the game for women in action thrillers. It’s amazing that all three movies are trending right now, especially in India! It’s a really intense, dark film, but that’s exactly why I think everyone is loving it so much.
Mardaani 3 follows Shivani Shivaji Roy, a fearless and determined police officer, as she pursues a criminal network that has kidnapped almost 100 girls throughout India. The movie is the third installment in a series that began in 2014, with each film showcasing Roy’s fight against traffickers and other criminals. While action franchises are often led by male stars, Rani Mukerji is demonstrating that women can successfully lead and power these types of films too.
The Mardaani Films Tap Into an Underestimated Subgenre
Action movies often feature male leads and exciting scenes of chases and confrontations with criminals. However, the Mardaani films have challenged this trend, demonstrating that women can successfully lead similar action-packed stories. Film critic Nandini Ramnath describes the movie as fast-paced, well-made, and captivating, effectively combining a strong female lead with a compelling plot.
Even though Mardaani 3 deals with tough and disturbing crimes, it feels like a typical Bollywood thriller, similar to popular Netflix hits like Detective Hole or Unfamiliar. The film centers on a woman who fights for her beliefs and defends herself against both societal expectations and the prejudice she faces as a woman in a traditionally male profession. According to critic Rishabh Suri, this installment isn’t necessarily shocking, but rather reinforces the ongoing nature of the fight against these issues. While it may not be the strongest film in the Mardaani series, it serves as a stark reminder that Shivani’s battle – and the crimes it addresses – are far from resolved.
