As a huge movie fan, I’ve noticed Netflix is absolutely exploding with amazing films and shows from all over the world. It used to be a surprise when an Indian action series, a German thriller, or a K-drama shot to the top of the charts, but now it’s almost expected! This new Korean action movie is the latest example – it’s really delivering on the buzz, wrapping up a fantastic trilogy, and it’s currently number one in Netflix’s non-English film rankings. It’s fantastic to see these films getting the recognition they deserve.
The new Korean film, Humint (also known as Human Intelligence), is quickly gaining popularity on streaming services. It follows a South Korean agent on a dangerous mission to dismantle a drug operation in Russia. The agent soon discovers they’re not the only one on the case, finding themselves in a tense rivalry with a North Korean operative. As both agents dig deeper, they uncover increasingly dangerous secrets. The film has a gritty, classic noir feel, reminiscent of old spy thrillers, and features stunning visuals.
Humint Is a Reminder of Why Old-School Spy Movies Are So Great
Initial reactions to the film Humint are generally good, with both critics and audiences agreeing that while it prioritizes style over a deep story at times, the latter half of the movie is particularly strong. Critic James Marsh notes that those who can appreciate the slow build-up of the first hour, with its shadowy scenes in nightclubs and snowy streets, will be treated to some excellent action sequences in the second half – some of the best in the genre recently.
Viewers have noted a strong connection between Humint and the early films of James Woo, particularly in the action sequences. This influence is apparent throughout director Ryoo Seung-wan’s unofficial trilogy, including the 2013 film The Berlin File and the 2021 release Escape from Mogadishu. One viewer shared, “I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! It was so intense – my dog even reacted to my yelling, and I had to protect my wheatbag from getting it’s attention! But seriously, it was a fantastic, action-packed movie.”
This spy thriller isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s a good, solid watch with plenty of action. It uses familiar elements of the genre – the very things that define it – and is certainly more enjoyable than many other ways you could spend two hours.
