2026 Thriller With 2 OG Avengers Stars is an Instant Prime Video Hit After $72M Box Office Disappointment

Despite a disappointing run in theaters, the 2026 thriller film featuring two original Avengers cast members is now a big success on Prime Video. Thrillers can often do well – the 2025 hit The Housemaid starring Sydney Sweeney is a good example – but it’s not guaranteed. High-budget movies sometimes struggle to earn back their costs, particularly if they don’t have a built-in fanbase. In the case of Crime 101, which is based on a story by Don Winslow, its large production budget contributed to its poor performance in cinemas. Luckily, it’s found much greater success on streaming platforms.

The thriller Crime 101 started streaming on Prime Video on April 1st, only two months after hitting theaters in February, and quickly became the platform’s most-watched movie (according to FlixPatrol). While the film didn’t perform well in cinemas—earning about $72 million against a $90 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo—it’s now attracting a lot of viewers. The impressive cast, featuring Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and original Avengers Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, is likely a big draw.

The plot of Crime 101 is also a good reason to tune in. This heist film follows a cunning thief who partners with an unhappy insurance broker, as a detective gets closer to catching them.

As a total movie buff, this sounds like my kind of story! It’s about a really clever thief planning one last big job, and he crosses paths with an insurance broker who’s feeling lost in her own life. Meanwhile, a determined detective is hot on their trail, trying to stop what looks like a massive heist. It’s a classic setup – I can already picture the tension!

While the premise isn’t entirely original, this film is still incredibly captivating. It’s already proving popular with viewers and critics alike, boasting impressive scores on Rotten Tomatoes (89% from critics and 85% from audiences). Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s leading actors, especially Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, will definitely want to see this, as both stars deliver strong performances in a thrilling story – and they’ve both had successful thrillers on streaming before.

Crime 101 Isn’t Chris Hemsworth or Mark Ruffalo’s First Thriller to Take Off on Streaming

Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo are becoming well-known for their work in thrillers. Ruffalo recently starred in the first season of HBO’s crime thriller, Task, and Hemsworth has already proven his ability to lead action-packed thrillers with films like Extraction and its sequel. Both actors are perfectly suited for Crime 101, and their past success in both this genre and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe demonstrates their strong screen presence. It’s not surprising that Crime 101 is now attracting attention from Prime Video viewers, even though it didn’t perform well in theaters initially. It’s taken a while, but the film is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
