Following the success of last summer’s 28 Years Later, which earned $151.3 million worldwide on a $60 million budget, there was a lot of anticipation for the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. While critics loved the film – particularly the acting, story, and director Nia DaCosta – it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $58.5 million worldwide despite a $63 million budget. Now, however, the horror film is finding an audience thanks to streaming, proving once again that streaming can save a movie that underperforms in cinemas.
The movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has climbed to number two on JustWatch’s weekly Top 10 Movies chart, up from third place last week. It’s currently just behind the popular crime drama Crime 101.
Will The Third 28 Years Later Movie Still Happen?

JustWatch is a helpful website and app that tells you where to find movies and TV shows online. It includes both subscription services like Netflix and platforms where you can rent or buy titles. The recent popularity of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple on JustWatch shows there’s a lot of interest in the film. While it didn’t do well in theaters, many people are now looking for ways to stream it. The Bone Temple became available on Netflix at the end of March.
With the recent success of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple on DVD and streaming, people are starting to wonder what’s happening with the previously announced third film. Director Danny Boyle originally intended the first 28 Years Later to be the beginning of a three-movie series, and Sony seemed on board with that plan, even reporting progress on the third film in December 2025. However, that was before The Bone Temple came out. The studio was hoping Bone Temple would be a blockbuster, and now the future of the 28 Years Later series is uncertain.
A release date hasn’t been set for the third 28 Years Later movie, suggesting Sony was waiting to see how well The Bone Temple did before committing. Even though The Bone Temple ends with an unresolved cliffhanger that fans are eager to see concluded, Sony still needs to consider whether another 28 Years Later film would be a profitable investment. If ticket sales dropped significantly between the first two movies, a third film might perform even worse. Just because the movie did well on streaming doesn’t guarantee it would succeed in theaters – it’s easier to convince people to watch something at home than to go to a cinema.
Whether a third 28 Years Later movie will actually be made is still uncertain, but many believe it should happen. The first two films were both critically acclaimed, successfully blending exciting action with meaningful storytelling. They revitalized the popular series, offering a unique take on zombie films and expanding the world in interesting ways. Director Danny Boyle deserves the opportunity to finish the story, and it would be disappointing if Sony cancelled the project. It would be beneficial for everyone involved to find a solution – perhaps by reducing the film’s budget or releasing it directly on Netflix, leveraging the success of The Bone Temple’s streaming audience. Considering how long fans waited for the series to return, it would be ideal if Boyle could conclude it his way.
