The Green Lantern Corps is a fascinating idea from DC Comics: a galactic police force fueled by willpower, creativity, and green energy. Two of its most popular members, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, have been featured in comics for decades. However, the Green Lanterns’ unusual nature makes them challenging to adapt into live-action movies. After a couple of unsuccessful tries, DC is rebooting the franchise, finally bringing the team we’ve been waiting 55 years to see to the big screen.
The new HBO series, Lanterns, will bring together Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they team up to solve a murder mystery in the American Midwest. The show is scheduled to debut in August.

John Stewart first appeared in the comic book Green Lantern #87 in December 1971. He was created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist Neal Adams. Stewart was introduced as a confident and direct architect from Detroit, selected by the Guardians of the Universe to fill in for Hal Jordan. This happened after the previous backup Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, was hurt.
Jordan and Stewart didn’t hit it off right away. Jordan worried about Stewart’s tendency to break rules and ignore authority, while Stewart found Jordan too rigid and stuck in his ways. This constant tension actually made their relationship more captivating.
Interestingly, despite both being well-known Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart have never appeared together in a live-action movie or TV show. Previous adaptations have always focused on just one of them. Ryan Reynolds famously played Hal Jordan in the 2011 Green Lantern movie, which wasn’t well-received and led to the character being absent from screens for over ten years.
Although John Stewart was the most well-known Green Lantern for many fans thanks to his appearance in the popular Justice League cartoon from the early 2000s, he never starred in his own live-action movie or TV show.
I’ve been following the buzz around this for a while, and it’s great to finally see it happen! Zack Snyder had plans to include this character in his DC movies, but it never quite worked out. Now, with Lanterns, that changes – and honestly, it’s incredibly exciting. It feels like this could open up a whole new world of possibilities for the entire DC Universe.
Why Is John Stewart and Hal Jordan’s Lantern Team-up Exciting?

The relationship between John Stewart and Hal Jordan is one of the most compelling parts of Lanterns. Kyle Chandler portrays Hal as an experienced hero nearing the end of his career, while still holding strong beliefs. Aaron Pierre plays John as a former Marine who is figuring out what the Green Lantern Corps expects from him.
The show’s first trailer hints at a very complex relationship between the characters. For example, in one scene, Hal dramatically drives a car off a cliff and jumps out, forcing John to save himself as they fall. While seemingly extreme, this act highlights Hal’s unconventional and demanding mentoring style. John reacts calmly, even joking that Hal could have killed him, which emphasizes how different the two characters are.
The intriguing part of this team-up is the direction it’s taking. Instead of dealing with alien invasions or galaxy-wide dangers, these two space lawmen are investigating a murder in rural Nebraska – a crime usually handled by local detectives. This down-to-earth setting actually brings Hal and John closer, focusing on their complex relationship. It’s essentially a story about two men with conflicting viewpoints trying to solve a mystery in a quiet American town. By stripping away the fantastical elements, the story highlights the core of what matters: the connection between these two characters.
The series will also feature Sinestro, a former Lantern and Hal’s old mentor, played by Ulrich Thomsen. His arrival will challenge the growing partnership between Hal and John. For Hal, facing Sinestro means confronting his past, while for John, who is still learning the meaning of being a Green Lantern, Sinestro represents a completely new level of threat. It will be fascinating to see how the show portrays the Green Lantern rings and their abilities, especially since this version aims for a realistic feel. Ultimately, it’s great to finally see Hal and John working together on screen.
