Near the end of its run, the popular sitcom Friends unexpectedly removed one of its original supporting characters. Friends is often considered the greatest TV show about friendship, and a big reason for its success was the strong connection between its six main actors: Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Joey, and Phoebe. They worked well as a group, but their individual pairings were also very funny, which allowed the show to create a lot of interesting and entertaining combinations.
The show cleverly gave each supporting character their own storyline, ensuring everyone had a purpose beyond just being part of the core group of friends. This allowed the cast to expand with memorable characters like Jack and Judy Geller, and Gunther. While some, like Gunther and the Gellers, interacted with the main group, others were connected to just one of the friends – characters like Estelle – but they were still important to the show.
A major surprise in the final season of Friends was the death of Estelle Leonard, revealed in the episode “The One Where Estelle Dies,” which aired on April 22, 2004. The unexpected plot twist happened while the show was building towards its series finale and during a hectic time for production.
Why Estelle’s Death Was Vital To Joey’s Friends Ending

At first, Estelle’s death felt like a surprising plot point added just for shock value. It happened in the second-to-last episode, and with so much else happening – Chandler and Monica moving, Rachel going to Paris – it seemed like just another event. However, Estelle’s death had a special impact on Joey. Everyone else was experiencing big changes in their lives, but Joey felt stuck and uncertain.
Losing his agent, Estelle, was actually a turning point for him. She’d been with him through everything, all the highs and lows of his career and throughout Friends. But after she passed away, it gave him the freedom to make a big move and finally head out to Los Angeles. It felt like the right time, and honestly, I think she would have been proud of him for taking that chance. It’s a shame the Joey show didn’t get the chance to explore that part of his life; it would have been a great story.
The episode “The One Where Estelle Dies” also showed a surprisingly touching side of the relationship between Joey and Phoebe. When Phoebe learned about Estelle’s death, she initially kept it from Joey, knowing how upset he would be. She tried to shield him from the news, going to considerable effort to spare him heartbreak, but her attempt didn’t last long. It was a kind gesture, even if it wasn’t successful.
Friends is available to stream on HBO Max.
