New Mandalorian & Grogu Footage Supports a Major Empire Theory & Proves a 24-Year-Old Legends Line Right

A recent clip from The Mandalorian and Grogu suggests how the Empire will factor into the movie’s story. The final trailer and footage shown at CinemaCon last week confirmed that Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu are pursuing a mysterious warlord played by Jonny Coyne. While the overall story is still largely unknown, a new clip shared by Jon Favreau on Jimmy Kimmel Live! provides some significant hints about the plot.

This short video is clearly made for a broad audience, not just dedicated fans. It focuses on how adorable Grogu is, showing him trying to assist Din and Zeb in escaping the remaining Imperial troops. Importantly, they’ve already captured the warlord belonging to Coyne.

“The Empire Will Always Strike Back”

The footage clearly shows Din and Zeb capturing the Imperial warlord. Even more interesting is the planet where this happens – it matches Adelphi, a key New Republic base in the Outer Rim. This supports the idea that the Empire is launching an attack on Adelphi, which would be a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the New Republic Rangers and the remaining Imperial forces. Previously, the Empire had been working secretly, allowing New Republic leaders to think the danger had passed and that the military was overreacting. An attack on a major base like Adelphi completely changes the situation.

Honestly, it feels right that the Empire is making a move now. The Mandalorian and Grogu is so accessible, anyone can jump in and enjoy it, but it does happen after the events of Ahsoka Season 1. That’s where Grand Admiral Thrawn came back – and Palpatine himself thought Thrawn could have actually won the war against the Rebels! Knowing Ahsoka Season 2 is going to be all about a war between the New Republic and the Empire, it seems like The Mandalorian and Grogu is where this new galactic conflict really begins. I’m so excited to see where it goes!

The trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu clearly remind viewers of The Empire Strikes Back, especially with a dramatic scene featuring AT-ATs. However, the idea of the Empire fighting back also echoes a line from Walter Jon Williams’ 2002 novel, Destiny’s Way. In that book, a character famously said, “The Empire will always strike back.” It seems this holds true in the official Star Wars story too – even though Din and Zeb have captured a powerful enemy, the Empire is determined to get him back.
