Back in 2005, director Christopher Nolan suggested a particular Batman villain might appear in a film, but it never happened. Now, it looks like that villain could finally make an appearance in The Batman 2. While there was talk of Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two-Face, being the next big bad, recent reports suggest the sequel will feature a villain who hasn’t been the primary antagonist in a movie before, though they’ve had small roles twice. If this is accurate, and actor Sebastian Stan isn’t playing Two-Face, it could lead to a completely new and dangerous storyline for Batman.
Victor Zsasz first appeared briefly in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, played by Tim Booth. Fifteen years later, Chris Messina took on the role in Birds of Prey, where he was a supporting villain working for Black Mask. Now, rumors suggest Messina will play the primary villain in The Batman 2.
Victor Zsasz Has Been Wasted So Far In DC Movies

Matt Reeves’ take on Batman is unlike any previous film series. While Tim Burton focused on gothic visuals, Joel Schumacher brought a playful energy, Christopher Nolan aimed for a realistic crime thriller feel, and Zack Snyder went for grand spectacle, Reeves has crafted a dark and gritty world where Batman confronts villains rooted in real-world issues. The first movie showcased this with characters like the Riddler – presented as someone who manipulates public opinion – alongside traditional criminals such as Falcone and Penguin.
Victor Zsasz is a chilling villain known for meticulously tracking his victims and carving a tally mark on his skin with each life taken. He’s appeared in several Batman adaptations, including the video game series Batman: Arkham and the TV show Gotham, where Anthony Carrigan portrayed him. Alex Morf also played Zsasz in The CW’s Batwoman. However, his portrayal in films hasn’t fully captured his character. In Batman Begins, he only had a brief scene – just over a minute long – where Scarecrow suggested sending him to Arkham Asylum, and later attempted to attack Rachel Dawes before Batman intervened.
In Birds of Prey, he played a significant role as a dedicated henchman for Black Mask, tasked with recovering the stolen diamond from Cassandra Cain. He continued to pursue the diamond and seek revenge on Cain, Black Canary, and Harley Quinn for turning against his boss throughout the film. Ultimately, Helena Bertinelli (The Huntress) killed him, bringing his time in the DC Extended Universe to an end.
Victor Zsasz Is a Perfect Batman Villain in Matt Reeves’ World

Though Christopher Nolan only briefly featured Victor Zsasz, Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman 2 could give the villain a proper introduction. Current speculation suggests Sebastian Stan will play Zsasz instead of Harvey Dent, though Brian Tyree Henry is now believed to be taking on the role of Dent. Adding to the potential plot, rumors point to the inclusion of the Court of Owls, with Charles Dance possibly playing their leader – a secret society that has manipulated Gotham City for generations.
It’s just a theory at this point, but Victor Zsasz might be a serial killer secretly controlled or used by the Court of Owls to eliminate their rivals. Given their influence over law enforcement and the courts, they could easily protect him from jail and keep him free to continue working for them. Sebastian Stan would be a fantastic fit for the role, as he proved in the movie Fresh that he can convincingly play this type of character. Zsasz is a simple, terrifying killer without any flashy costumes or tricks, which makes him an ideal villain to challenge Robert Pattinson’s Batman in this gritty universe.
As a follow-up to The Batman, this concept really clicks with me. Gotham was left in such ruins at the end of the first film, it makes perfect sense for a serial killer like Victor Zsasz – someone who preys on the vulnerable – to be thriving. And if Sebastian Stan is indeed playing Zsasz instead of Harvey Dent, and they go with the character’s truly terrifying comic book origins from the nineties, then The Batman Part II could finally deliver on something Christopher Nolan hinted at way back in his films. It’s a smart connection that feels earned and exciting.
