22 Years On, Major Shonen Series’ Fans Still Await a Deserving Anime Adaptation

Atsushi Ohkubo is the creator of the popular manga series Soul Eater and Fire Force, which share a common universe. Soul Eater began publication in 2003, with the first collected volume appearing in Japan in 2004. In 2015, Ohkubo launched Fire Force as a prequel, expanding on the world established in Soul Eater. Both series are celebrated for their imaginative settings, exciting action, and particularly for delivering a very satisfying conclusion, a rarity in the Shonen genre. While Fire Force recently finished its anime adaptation, the same isn’t true for Soul Eater. Studio Bones adapted Soul Eater into an anime in 2008, producing a total of 51 episodes.

The anime adaptation of this series has faced criticism for changing the original story and for not finishing it. It’s been 17 years since the anime ended, and there’s still no news about a continuation. Although the ending of Fire Force hinted at a new Soul Eater anime, it’s uncertain whether the series will return as a sequel or a remake. Despite being popular, the story still deserves a proper anime adaptation.

What Is Soul Eater About?

The story takes place in a world rebuilt by Shinra following a devastating event known as the Great Cataclysm. After the previous world was destroyed and turned into a sun, Shinra recreated everything. To prevent another such disaster, he intentionally made life more fragile. In this new world, people readily accept that death is a part of life.

The anime Soul Eater takes place in a newly formed world, focusing on the students of Death City’s Death Weapon Meister Academy. Led by the powerful Lord Death, the academy trains students to become Death Scythes – weapons wielded by the Shinigami to fight evil. These aren’t ordinary weapons, though; they’re created from humans who can transform into powerful Demon Weapons.

To reach their full potential, these characters need to absorb the souls of 99 evil beings and one witch. The story follows Soul Eater Evans, a weapon called a Demon Scythe, and his partner, Meister Maka Albarn, as they work with others to collect souls and defend their city from numerous dangers. Their ultimate goal is for Soul Eater to become a powerful Death Scythe.
