25 Years Ago the First X-Men Movie Was Released, Here’s Where You Can Stream It

Currently, it seems like we’re experiencing the pinnacle of superhero movie era, but fans experienced a similar excitement 25 years ago today as X-Men premiered in cinemas for the first time. This film made its debut on July 14, 2000, and now you can watch it from home. In America, the movie is accessible on Disney+ with any subscription, including a bundle. Alternatively, you can digitally rent or buy it on most major PVOD platforms such as Amazon’s Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and the Microsoft Store. Given that it’s the anniversary and the current buzz surrounding comic book movies, revisiting this superhero classic by watching an X-Men rerun could be particularly fitting this week.

Back in the day, X-Men wasn’t exactly true-to-the-comics when it comes to adaptations, but it was still a pivotal step that set off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and our current appreciation for comic book movies. The film embraced its supernatural elements where it truly mattered, although we didn’t get to witness Wolverine in his iconic yellow suit on the big screen until very recently. With 20th Century Studios wrapping up their X-Men saga and Marvel Studios gearing up to introduce their own mutant gene, the fondness for this movie is bound to increase even more.

The screenplay for this film was penned by David Hayter, inspired by a story conceived by Tom DeSanto and Bryan Singer. Singer himself directed the movie. It primarily focuses on Logan, also known as Wolverine (portrayed by Hugh Jackman), who along with a teenage runaway named Marie, or Rogue (Anna Paquin), encounter a realm inhabited by individuals similar to themselves – mutants endowed with extraordinary talents. They find sanctuary at the School for Gifted Youngsters led by Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). However, they inevitably get entangled in Xavier’s struggle against Erik Lehnsherr, who goes by Magneto (Ian McKellen), and his group of radical mutant activists.

Regardless of the vibrant outfits and traditional comic book elements, this film remains as enjoyable and engaging today, comparable to most Marvel Cinematic Universe productions. Admittedly, not all X-Men films can claim the same longevity, but they certainly made a solid debut. Given that some of these characters will feature in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s worth revisiting this movie within the next year and a half or so.

As a passionate movie buff, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic moment when “X-Men” graced our screens simultaneously on DVD and VHS back in November 2000. This groundbreaking film was a blockbuster hit in those days, and as the series progressed, re-releases and box sets continued to thrive financially. The movie’s journey through various platforms became somewhat erratic during the streaming era – even after Disney took over 20th Century Studios. Initially, Disney+ was hesitant to host movies with PG-13 ratings, but luckily, that policy has evolved. Now, the “X-Men” films proudly stand among other Marvel productions on Disney+’s main page for all things Marvel, which could suggest a close connection between these films and the MCU in the upcoming Multiverse Saga finale.

For fans looking forward to celebrating X-Men’s 25th anniversary, you can now stream it on Disney+. Alternatively, you can digitally rent or buy the film from PVOD retailers, or opt for a DVD or Blu-ray version.
