Parody movies, once a dominant force in comedy, especially in the 1980s, saw a decline after a flood of spoof films like Scary Movie and Disaster Movie in the 2000s. While the genre is starting to make a comeback with new films such as a Naked Gun reboot and Scary Movie 6, a classic from its peak is now available to stream on Hulu, 25 years after it was first released.
Many consider Not Another Teen Movie to be the last truly funny parody film. Released in December 2001, it came out right as the genre started to decline, moving away from smart satire and towards poorly made, critically disliked spoofs. Now, 25 years later, the beloved movie is available to stream on Hulu as of April 1st. For those who’ve forgotten, Not Another Teen Movie playfully mocks classic teen films from the 80s and 90s like She’s All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Pretty in Pink. The story revolves around popular athlete Jake Wyler, who makes a bet that he can turn Janey Briggs, labeled as the “unpopular ugly girl,” into prom queen.
Not Another Teen Movie Perfectly Skewered Coming-Of-Age Films To Become a Cult Classic
Not Another Teen Movie really nailed it. While many later parody films just hinted at pop culture, this one specifically targeted teen movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s, brilliantly poking fun at every familiar trope and cliché. The movie’s humor, often outrageous, cleverly mocked dozens of teen films – from recreating detention scenes and bringing back a cast member from The Breakfast Club to satirizing the desperate search for first love seen in American Pie, complete with similar silly gags. It was clear the filmmakers truly understood and appreciated the movies they were parodying, turning predictable storylines into hilariously over-the-top comedy.
When Not Another Teen Movie first came out, it didn’t receive much praise. While it earned $66 million worldwide on a $15 million budget, critics and audiences generally didn’t like it. Many considered it a cheap and predictable parody, similar to other low-quality spoof films of the time, and it only scored 32% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 55% from audiences. However, over the years, the film’s reputation has grown. It’s now considered a cult classic and one of the last genuinely funny parody movies.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu has added a lot of new movies this April, including Not Another Teen Movie. Other recent additions include popular titles like 50 First Dates, The Devil Wears Prada, Monster House, Napoleon Dynamite, Pacific Rim: Uprising, all the main Shrek films, Pizza Movie, and Primitive War, plus many more.
