As Fall approaches, many Gilmore Girls fans are preparing to re-watch the series from beginning to end. It’s hard to believe, but this beloved comedy-drama is celebrating its 25th anniversary on October 5th. Yes, you read that correctly! Gilmore Girls has matured, but it remains a fan favorite. The show originally aired on the WB network starting in 2000 and ran for seven seasons, followed by a continuation called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. This iconic series is still incredibly comforting, taking viewers to a charming small town filled with lively and unique characters. What’s not to enjoy?
Gilmore Girls was a huge hit for both The WB and The CW. Many consider it to be one of the greatest TV shows ever made, and we agree! Gilmore Girls primarily focused on Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her daughter, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel). This mother-daughter duo is well-known for their incredibly fast-paced conversations as they pursue their dreams and deal with everyday life. Because of this, the show always managed to be both inspiring and comforting.
The Autumnal Magic of Stars Hollow
One of the things that makes Gilmore Girls feel so warm and inviting is definitely its characters and the generally comforting nature of the story. But a big part of that feeling also comes from the town of Stars Hollow itself. Gilmore Girls takes place in a small town in Connecticut called Stars Hollow – the type of place where everyone knows what everyone else is up to, and where it’s (usually) safe to just stroll down the street.
What truly brings Stars Hollow to life is its residents, and there’s a wonderfully eccentric group of people living there. Many fans will instantly start naming their favorite characters – like Luke, Miss Patty, Lane, Mrs. Kim, Jackson, Sookie, Babette, and so on. And we can’t forget the most unusual one of all, Kirk!
Stars Hollow serves as a cozy and charming setting for the show. The town square has a welcoming, home-like feel, featuring Luke’s Diner, a beautiful gazebo, and other delightful spots. Plus, Stars Hollow is known for its many festivals, which provide the perfect reason for our beloved characters to wear their comfy sweaters and enjoy the outdoors.
The Love of Coffee, Food, and Books
If there’s one thing fans expect from Gilmore Girls, it’s a ton of references to pop culture. Perhaps it’s the coffee that speeds up their chats, but each conversation is packed with dozens of them. They cover everything – current TV shows, movies, plays, books, politics, and so much more.
Lorelai and Rory frequently show their fondness for food and coffee; many scenes feature them either enjoying a meal or wishing they had one. This makes them very relatable. Their enjoyment of casual, junk food is nicely contrasted by Emily Gilmore’s appreciation for more sophisticated dishes. Although, her refined taste isn’t a major storyline in the series. It’s a subtle detail.
While Stars Hollow perfectly captures the charm of Autumn, Gilmore Girls, as a series, is a tribute to those who adore reading. Rory is a bookish character who would be deeply upset to be without a book (or several!). She frequently mentions titles she’s reading, which has inspired many viewers to tackle her impressively long reading list.
New England Meets Pure Nostalgia
If you could capture the very heart of the 2000s and put it into a TV show, it would be Gilmore Girls. This show is completely nostalgic. Even the little details – like the landline phones, CDs, and the way things looked – strongly remind you of the ‘00s. Add in all the references to popular culture from that time, and you’ll immediately know when this series takes place.
There’s a comforting quality to Gilmore Girls – perhaps it’s the heartwarming nostalgia or the charming New England backdrop – that makes many viewers feel right at home, even if they’ve never been to the East Coast. It’s easy to imagine the Gilmore Girls welcoming their fans to Stars Hollow with a warm cup of cider and a detailed tour of all the local shops.
As a huge fan, I truly believe we’re the reason Gilmore Girls lasted as long as it did! We supported this show for years, and even brought it back for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2016. Even though that revival was just four episodes, we still want to see more of Lorelai and Rory’s amazing adventures. It’s incredible to think Gilmore Girls is turning 25, but it still feels so relevant and enjoyable for so many of us.
Gilmore Girls is available to stream on Hulu, Disney+, and Netflix.
