Following the merger between Paramount Pictures and Skydance, the studio is revisiting some of its popular franchises. One of these is the hit horror series Paranormal Activity, which is being produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. The filmmakers are now aiming for a more classic feel by selecting a director who understands the original films.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that Ian Tuason will direct the next Paranormal Activity movie, a project from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. Tuason is a Canadian director known for his successful horror shorts in live-action virtual reality – they’ve gained millions of views on YouTube and were even featured at SXSW. He recently won the audience award at the Fantasia International Film Festival for his film The Undertone, which sparked a bidding war ultimately won by A24.
Ian Tuason Is Perfect For The Paranormal Activity Franchise

The more you discover about director Julius Tuason’s work, the better he seems suited to direct a new installment in the Paranormal Activity series. His experience creating immersive horror shorts using virtual reality aligns perfectly with what made the first Paranormal Activity film so effective – it focuses on building suspense through what you don’t see, and how it affects all your senses.
This is especially true of Tuason’s new horror film, The Undertone, which focuses on the power of sound and paranormal experiences. The movie uses sound in a remarkably creepy and original way, drawing both the main character and the audience deeper into a frightening and unsettling story as she listens to recordings after moving in to care for her mother.
One of the things that made the original film so scary was its ability to create fear through atmosphere and suggestion, rather than relying on graphic visuals. Director Tuason clearly understands this technique and brings that same unsettling feeling to his work. With the backing of James Wan and Blumhouse, this relaunch has the potential to be a huge success and revitalize the franchise.
I remember hearing about how incredibly successful the first movie was – it only cost about $15,000 to make, but somehow earned over $194 million! It’s amazing to think that one film launched an entire franchise that’s continued all the way up to the latest release in 2021, with seven movies in total. It really shows the potential for a big return on investment, and I’m excited to see what happens next.
The new Paranormal Activity currently has no release date.
