A beloved anime from the 1990s is still popular today, constantly finding new ways to stay relevant. Many anime shows captivated Millennials back then, including classics like Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z. These shows haven’t disappeared; they’ve continued with new seasons and series. For example, after Ash Ketchum’s story ended in 2023, Pokémon Horizons: The Series began, and Dragon Ball Super carried on the Dragon Ball legacy.
That show isn’t alone in seeing a resurgence like that. There’s also a lesser-known anime from the ’90s that’s been consistently reinvented over the past 27 years, with each new version proving surprisingly successful. This longevity really shows how beloved the original series is, and demonstrates what can happen when a show is thoughtfully updated.
Digimon Adventure Made Its Debut 27 Years Ago

Originally airing in Japan in March 1999, Digimon Adventure is celebrating its 27th anniversary this week. The show centers around seven children who find themselves in a digital world and form partnerships with creatures called Digimon. While often compared to Pokémon, Digimon Adventure distinguished itself through features like its Digimon’s ability to speak and its dramatic, intense storylines. It quickly became popular, leading to the 2000 film Digimon: The Movie, a follow-up series, and a much larger franchise overall.
A big part of what made Digimon Adventure so enjoyable was the strong connection between the human kids, called DigiDestined, and their Digital Monster partners. Like Pokémon, the show featured cute creatures that could grow stronger and battle. But Digimon Adventure stood out because its characters were well-developed and faced real danger. These qualities helped make it one of the most memorable anime of the 1990s, even though it didn’t achieve the same level of mainstream popularity as some other shows from that era.
Digimon Is One of the Best ’90s Anime, Despite Never Reaching Pokémon’s Heights

Both Digimon and Pokémon were very popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but Pokémon ultimately became much more successful. Digimon still did well and continues to be around today, but Pokémon reached a wider audience and became a cultural phenomenon, while Digimon remained popular with a dedicated fanbase. This difference has become even more pronounced over the years.
Even with its flaws, I believe Digimon Adventure remains one of the best anime series from the 1990s. It was a key influence on the ‘isekai’ genre, offering a particularly creative take on it. The story appealed to both children and adults, and it was surprisingly moving. While Digimon Adventure definitely shows its age, its central ideas still resonate strongly even today, over twenty years later.
Digimon Has Successfully Reinvented Itself Many Times Since Its 1999 Premiere

It’s clear Digimon Adventure was a success, considering the franchise is still releasing new series 27 years later. The anime has constantly evolved, with sequels and reboots that still pay tribute to the original. While the original DigiDestined have reappeared in later series, some of the most creative installments have taken the story in unexpected directions.
With Digimon Tamers, the Digimon anime successfully reinvented itself, and many fans consider it a high point for the entire series. Digimon Frontier followed suit, also proving more popular over time than it was initially. Later series like Digimon Data Squad, Digimon Fusion, and Digimon Ghost Game continued to experiment with new ideas while still focusing on the strong relationships between characters. Over the years, the Digital monsters have been portrayed in many different ways – as living card games, dangerous government secrets, or even supernatural beings. The latest installment, Digimon Beatbreak, reflects a more modern, dystopian feel that fits with the themes of the 2020s and advancements in technology.
It’s really remarkable how often Digimon has reinvented itself, and that’s a big reason why it’s stayed popular for so many years. Other anime series thinking about major changes could learn from Digimon’s approach—although constantly switching characters and locations is a gamble that’s both exciting and potentially risky.
