Twenty-seven years ago, Marvel made a costly mistake with Spider-Man – a deal that ultimately cost them $3.95 billion and continues to affect them today. But while it was a loss for Marvel, Spider-Man fans have been benefiting ever since.
Many Marvel fans remember that the company faced serious financial difficulties in the late 1990s. This led them to begin talks with Sony in 1998, offering the rights to some of their popular characters.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, it’s amazing to think back to how Sony actually got the rights to make the movies! They paid around $7 million back in 1999, and honestly, it was one of the best investments ever. Just five Spider-Man films have brought in nearly $4 billion at the box office – that’s incredible!
Marvel’s $7 Million Spider-Man Deal Became a Multi-Billion Dollar Mistake
The Raimi Trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man Movies Alone Grossed Over $3.95 Billion
To understand how big a financial error it was for Marvel to sell the movie rights to Spider-Man to Sony, consider this: the five Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb earned a combined total of over $3.95 billion worldwide at the box office.
Box Office Mojo reports that the Spider-Man films have been incredibly successful: the original Spider-Man earned $804.5 million, Spider-Man 2 brought in $785.4 million, Spider-Man 3 grossed $885.8 million, The Amazing Spider-Man made $758.7 million, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earned $716.9 million. This represents a massive profit, and doesn’t even include revenue from other Spider-Man related properties like the Venom movies starring Tom Hardy or the popular Spider-Man video games.
Considering how incredibly profitable Spider-Man has been, it’s easy to see why Marvel regrets selling the rights to the character for just $7 million, especially after the first film directed by Sam Raimi. This decision continues to bother Marvel, as Sony Pictures still fully owns the film rights and produced the recent Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland, even though Marvel Studios influenced the creative process.

Sony’s Spider-Man films really shaped how many people see the character today. For Millennials and Gen Z, these movies were often their very first experience with Spider-Man, establishing what they expected from the hero.
