Over the 30+ years of Power Rangers, the show has featured many interesting plots and surprising twists. From secret villain identities to unexpected connections between characters, there have been plenty of compelling moments. However, one particular mystery stood out above the rest, driving an entire season’s storyline, and its answer was revealed 27 years ago.
Power Rangers In Space was a strong season, partly because of the intriguing story about Andros and his long-lost sister, Karone. Karone was kidnapped when she was young, and Andros had been searching for her ever since, unsure of who was responsible. The episode ‘Flashes of Darkonda,’ which originally aired on May 16, 1998, revealed that Darkonda had kidnapped Karone years ago. This discovery led to an even bigger surprise: Karone was actually Astronema, the series’ villain.
Karone’s Arc In Power Rangers Is One Of Its Best

As a huge Power Rangers fan, one of the most compelling storylines in In Space is watching Andros uncover the truth about his sister, Karone. It’s heartbreaking to learn she was kidnapped and then manipulated for years, brainwashed into believing the Power Rangers were the bad guys – and even becoming the villainous Astronema! Seeing how Ecliptor trained her and built her up into a powerful enemy with her own army was a really strong arc. It’s a classic story of family and betrayal, and it really made me invested in the season.
After taking on the name Astronema, she quickly became a powerful and feared villain, earning the title of Princess of Evil from Dark Spector. Her first mission was to eliminate a spy who had disrupted a meeting of villains – unaware that the spy was actually her brother, Andros. Beyond being a formidable opponent herself, she also assembled the Psycho Rangers, one of the most dangerous villain teams ever created.
Everything changed dramatically after Dark Specter’s defeat, which was meant to be her rise to power as the Queen of Evil. Instead of her taking the throne, a powerful energy wave released after Zordon’s destruction swept across the universe. This wave eliminated all traces of evil from anyone it touched, including Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, and Astronema.
Karone had fully recovered and was happily reunited with her brother, but her story continued. After the Pink Ranger, Kendrix Morgan, tragically passed away, Karone joined the Power Rangers Lost Galaxy team as a Ranger herself. Kendrix’s spirit not only saved Karone’s life but also passed on her Transmorpher, allowing Karone to become the new Pink Ranger. It was a remarkable storyline and remains one of the most beloved Power Rangers narratives ever told.
