Star Wars consistently generates passionate discussions about which characters are the most powerful. The Jedi and Sith – and those who fall somewhere in between – are central to the story, and every fan has their preferred list. While certain characters are universally popular, it’s the debate over ranking them that’s truly engaging. The more we see of a character, the more we understand their strengths and weaknesses, but even with that knowledge, deciding who’s the best can be surprisingly difficult.
For almost thirty years, Star Wars fans have argued about who would win in a fight: Darth Vader or Darth Maul. While the official Star Wars stories haven’t given a definitive answer, the new series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord provides enough information to finally make a strong case for one over the other.
Maul Is Nearly Killed By The Inquisitors

In episodes 7 and 8 of Shadow Lord – “Call to Oblivion” and “The Creeping Fear” – Darth Maul continues to pursue Jedi Padawan Devon Izara (played by Gideon Adlon) while she’s fleeing the Empire and the Inquisitor Marrok (A.J. LoCascio). Although Maul tries again to recruit Devon to his side, he’s unsuccessful. This encounter leads to Maul and his crew being discovered by the Empire, prompting a Stormtrooper battalion to be sent after them. The Inquisitor known as Eleventh Brother, or “the Crow,” then teams up with Marrok to track down Maul.
Two Inquisitors tracked down Maul and a fight broke out. Maul was quickly overwhelmed, and the Inquisitors, Marrok and the Crow, managed to damage one of his robotic legs, almost defeating him. He barely escaped by collapsing the cavern around them and running away.
The Vader vs Maul Power Debate Has Been Settled

When George Lucas released Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in 1999, fans were immediately intrigued and a little scared to discover that Emperor Palpatine had trained another powerful Sith Lord before Darth Vader. This new character, Darth Maul, instantly became popular, especially with his unique double-bladed lightsaber. However, a major letdown of the Star Wars prequels was that Maul never had the chance to battle Anakin Skywalker, and he also never fought Darth Vader after Anakin’s transformation. This has left a significant gap in the story for fans to imagine what could have been.
The fight in Shadow Lord reveals a lot about where Maul ranks among the most powerful Star Wars characters, particularly when compared to Darth Vader. Maul never achieves the same level of power as Anakin Skywalker, and falls far short of Vader’s strength as a Sith Lord. While Maul barely survived a battle with just two Inquisitors, Vader has faced the entire group, either to demonstrate his dominance, train them to hunt Jedi, or eliminate them in actual combat – as shown in his Marvel comic series.

The evidence clearly shows Darth Maul isn’t as powerful as Darth Vader. In Star Wars Rebels Season 2, Maul actively avoids fighting Vader, recognizing he’d lose. He also lost to Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, during the Clone Wars. If he couldn’t win against the student, there was no chance he could defeat the master. And when Maul finally fought Obi-Wan Kenobi, he was killed. In contrast, Vader defeated Obi-Wan and remained undefeated until he willingly sacrificed himself to return to the light side.
Let’s put the debate to rest: Darth Maul would have faced many tough opponents before even having a chance against Darth Vader, let alone winning.
