The new episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy came as a surprise to fans, offering a continuation of the Deep Space Nine storyline. Episode 4, titled “Series Acclimation Mil” and focused on the character SAM, revealed what happened to Captain Benjamin Sisko, who had been missing since the 24th century. While viewers suspected Sisko was important to the overall narrative, this episode confirmed his final destiny.
At the end of Deep Space Nine, Benjamin Sisko vanished, and fans wondered if he would ever come back. He was a very devoted family man, and it was painful to see him leave his loved ones, particularly his son, Jake. While Starfleet Academy established that Jake never saw his father again, he did feel his father’s presence without being able to confirm it. This outcome has sparked debate, but it ultimately felt like the correct choice for his character.
Sisko’s Heroism Was All About Sacrifice
Commander Benjamin Sisko’s bravery stems from the internal struggles that define his journey. He was a dedicated father deeply committed to his son, but also a man bound by a strong sense of obligation and a fate he didn’t ask for. As highlighted in the Sisko Museum, he was considered a “Chosen One,” guided by the Prophets to be their Emissary and a key player in the Dominion War. Throughout Deep Space Nine, the series consistently emphasized the conflict between these different parts of Sisko’s personality.
Throughout the series, Sisko increasingly became a character who believed the ends justified the means, willing to sacrifice anything to protect others. This shift is most evident in the episode “In the Pale Moonlight,” where he secretly worked to get the Romulans to join the Federation in the war against the Dominion. Knowing the galaxy’s survival was on the line, Sisko compromised his own morals and allowed illegal acts – including forgery, bribery, and even murder – to succeed. This episode marks a turning point for his character, clearly showing his willingness to be ruthless when necessary.
Sacrificing others is one thing, but a true hero is willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of others. The Deep Space Nine episode “In the Pale Moonlight” challenges whether Sisko qualifies as a hero, and the answer hinges on his willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice. If Sisko had been able to return to his family after the series finale, it would diminish the impact of his heroic actions, potentially invalidating his status as a hero. Thankfully, the ending – where Sisko remains in the Celestial Temple, as Avery Brooks desired – preserves the integrity of his heroism, as shown in Starfleet Academy.
It Is Always Others Who Pay the Price of Heroism
Unlike many heroic stories, Star Trek showed the lasting impact of sacrifice, not just on the hero, but on those they left behind. Benjamin Sisko’s death deeply affected his son, Jake, who spent his life honoring his father’s memory. The loss was a lifelong wound. Similarly, Sisko’s friend, Dax, mourned him deeply, continuing to remember him centuries later through her teachings at Starfleet Academy. Sisko’s choice had a profound and lasting impact on everyone who cared for him.
It would be simple to focus on the sadness of Benjamin Sisko’s absence, but the Starfleet Academy episode showed Jake always felt connected to his father. Though he couldn’t prove it, Jake’s unwavering belief in his father’s love gave him strength. The episode even included a quick glimpse of Sisko watching over things in the future, suggesting Jake’s feelings were completely valid.
The fifth episode of Starfleet Academy is a surprisingly fitting and heartfelt tribute to Captain Sisko. It skillfully builds upon the storylines and themes of Deep Space Nine, and also pays respect to the actor Avery Brooks who portrayed him. Revisiting beloved stories is always risky for a franchise – nostalgia can easily lead to disappointment. However, Starfleet Academy succeeded in creating a truly impressive continuation of the original series.
