As a lifelong fan of both Power Rangers and awesome team-ups, I’ve seen the Rangers cross paths with some incredible heroes in comics – the Justice League, Street Fighter characters, even Usagi Yojimbo and Godzilla! But surprisingly, most of these epic crossovers haven’t happened on TV. Except for one amazing team-up that happened 28 years ago today! It was a classic, and honestly, we’re overdue for another Power Rangers TV crossover – bring it on, I say!
On February 27, 1998, the fourth episode of Power Rangers In Space, titled “Shell Shocked,” aired. The episode was a special crossover event, bringing together the Power Rangers and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles featured were from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation series – Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Venus. You can watch the full episode in the video provided.
No One Expected Power Rangers In Space To Cross Over With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Since 1998, comic books have featured several exciting team-ups between the Power Rangers and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, the very first crossover – pairing Power Rangers In Space with The Next Mutation – really proved how well these two franchises could work together.
Although The Next Mutation isn’t a fan favorite, the crossover with the Power Rangers was still enjoyable to watch. This wasn’t the first time the Power Rangers had teamed up with another series, as Mighty Morphin previously crossed over with Masked Rider. Interestingly, the episode establishes that the Power Rangers exist as comic book characters within the Turtles’ universe, a point the Turtles themselves acknowledge after initially questioning the Rangers’ authenticity.
In this episode, Astronema tricks the Turtles into working for her. Her goal is to have them become friends with the In Space Rangers, then betray and defeat them. Surprisingly, the plan succeeds – the Turtles gain the Rangers’ trust and damage their Megaship and D.E.C.A. However, the Turtles break free from Astronema’s control and team up with the Rangers to fight her Quantron army. They even fight side-by-side in pairs: TJ with Donatello, Ashley with Raphael, Carlos with Venus, Cassie with Michelangelo, and Andros with Leonardo.
While some parts haven’t held up over time, particularly how the Turtles were portrayed, this remains a significant moment in both Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles history. Considering the recent comics have proven the potential, another crossover would be fantastic. With a Power Rangers reboot and a new Turtles movie potentially on the way, there’s hope we might actually see it happen – but for now, we’ll have to be patient.
