28 Years Later Makes Samson the Most Memorable Zombie in Movie History (And Not Just Because of THAT)

Samson is back in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and his role in the sequel could make him the most iconic zombie in film. The 28 Days Later series features fast, aggressive zombies, and several have become well-known. But Samson is now even more significant, thanks to a major reveal in The Bone Temple.

Samson first appeared in 28 Years Later as a powerful Alpha zombie, leading a large group of infected near the Bone Temple. He’s memorable for his huge size and the fact that he’s completely nude. Ralph Fiennes’ character, Dr. Ian Kelson, is particularly interested in Samson, and uses drugs to calm him down for research, which is explored in more detail in The Bone Temple.

Samson Is Cured Of The Rage Virus In The Bone Temple

In 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Dr. Ian Kelson develops a new idea about the rage virus. He suggests that there’s a psychological component, and believes those infected are seeing things that aren’t real when they attack people. When Samson says the word “moon” while looking at the night sky, Kelson gains the confidence to test this theory on the Alpha zombie.

One night, Kelson secretly gives Samson some psychiatric medication. The next day, Samson has disappeared. We later see him alone on a train, where he remembers a time before the rage virus – he recalls being a child and talking to a ticket inspector. Suddenly, zombies attack him, showing that they no longer recognize him as one of their own.

Even when fighting the infected, Samson still shows flashes of his old aggression, suggesting he hasn’t completely returned to being human. However, his improved mental state confirms Kelson’s belief that the rage virus can be treated. While a complete cure remains uncertain, Samson’s positive response to psychiatric medication – remembering human thoughts and becoming less violent – indicates the medicine could potentially offer a solution for the wider post-apocalyptic world.

Most zombie stories focus on finding a cure for the virus, but Samson is unique – he’s a zombie who has been cured. The story, The Bone Temple, delves into what it means to be human again through Samson’s experiences, particularly his connection with Kelson. This relationship between a survivor and a former zombie is unlike anything seen before, adding a surprising depth to 28 Years Later compared to typical zombie films.

Will Samson Return In 28 Years Later 3?

At the end of The Bone Temple, Samson’s future is uncertain. We last see him carrying Dr. Kelson’s body at the Bone Temple, and it’s unclear where he’s going or what he intends to do now that he’s been healed. However, he clearly has more control over his own destiny than before. This leads to speculation about whether Samson will appear in 28 Years Later 3.

A third film in the 28 Years Later series is confirmed, with Sony announcing it in December 2025. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are returning to finish the story they started with this revival trilogy. The ending of The Bone Temple hinted at the future direction of the third movie, specifically with a cameo from Jim, suggesting that the character Samson might return.

Now that Kelson has died, he took the secret to his rage virus cure with him, making it difficult for anyone else to find. However, there’s still a chance someone could learn about his work by finding Samson. While there aren’t enough medical supplies on the island to widely distribute a cure, Kelson’s research, especially his work with Samson, could be a valuable first step towards rebuilding a better life for everyone.

It will be challenging to explain in the third movie how someone not only finds Samson, but also learns he’s been healed. Since Samson has trouble communicating, he likely can’t share Kelson’s ideas with anyone. Given Boyle and Garland’s storytelling skills, they’re aware they need to avoid unrealistic plot devices if they decide to bring Samson back into the story.

Samson will probably slip under the radar of the people who survived, which creates a compelling situation – the key to a cure for the rage virus is right there, unnoticed. He has the potential to completely change things, but for now, he’ll likely keep going as his memories return.
