28 Years Later, Star Trek Just Paid The Perfect Tribute to One of its Greatest Episodes

The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is a fitting tribute to Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary, and it’s becoming clear that it especially honors Deep Space Nine. The fifth episode centers around the lingering question of what happened to Benjamin Sisko, whose fate was left open at the end of the original series. While it seemed Sisko sacrificed himself in a final showdown with Gul Dukat, he was actually saved by the beings from the wormhole. Now, thanks to Starfleet Academy, we learn that Sisko never made it back home and continues to observe the universe from afar.

As a huge fan, I was thrilled to see not one, but two characters from Deep Space Nine show up in the Starfleet Academy episode! It all started with the Dax symbiote – still around in the 32nd century and now teaching at the Academy. She sent SAM on this amazing mission to learn more about Sisko, which led her to the Sisko Museum. There was one exhibit in particular that really blew me away. Honestly, the whole scene felt huge, quietly changing things in Star Trek lore and making one of Deep Space Nine’s best episodes even more meaningful. It was fantastic!

The Sisko Museum Contains A Surprising Artifact

Visiting the Sisko Museum is incredible, and one item really caught my eye – a typewriter, right over there on the left. Most of the exhibits beautifully represent different parts of who Benjamin Sisko was, like the baseball glove and ball, which is a lovely touch. But the typewriter? That instantly reminded me of “Far Beyond the Stars,” which is, in my opinion, one of the very best episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Seeing it, I remembered how that Season 6 episode from 1998 really shaped Sisko’s personal journey and added so much depth to his character.

The experience transported Sisko to 1953 New York City, where he became Benny Russell, a Black science-fiction writer. He encountered people who resembled his colleagues from Deep Space Nine – played by the same actors, but appearing as ordinary humans. The resulting episode was a powerful and daring examination of racism and prejudice, as Russell faced rejection for his stories, including one featuring a Black captain commanding a space station.

While Star Trek often explores political issues, the episode “Far Beyond the Stars” is unique because it directly addresses racism on Earth, rather than using metaphors or alien societies. It’s also memorable for Avery Brooks’ powerful performance as Benny Russell, showcasing his acting ability like never before. Considered one of the most inventive episodes in Star Trek history, it’s great to see it honored in Starfleet Academy – and that nod carries a surprising amount of weight.

Benjamin Sisko Never Used A Typewriter, So Why Is There One In The Sisko Museum?

This Deep Space Nine Easter egg has a clever twist. While Commander Sisko never used a typewriter, one appears in the museum exhibit about his life, which seems strange. The answer likely comes from a line in the episode “Far Beyond the Stars,” where a Prophet suggests that Russell was both the one dreaming and the dream itself. This hints that Sisko didn’t just have a vision – his mind actually connected with a science fiction writer from 1953, and they each briefly experienced the other’s life.

Notably, Benny Russell reappeared in a Season 7 episode, “Shadows and Symbols,” which implied he was committed to a mental institution. This should be understood as a clue that his story didn’t end with Sisko’s vision, and supports the idea that he and Sisko shared a connected fate. The producers even considered this possibility when planning the finale of Deep Space Nine; they briefly thought about a final scene where Benny was pitching an idea for the show itself, but ultimately decided against it.

A hidden detail in the Starfleet Academy sequence suggests that Benny Russell was a real person, just as the show’s creators intended. The Federation apparently learned about this connection and paid tribute to it by including a typewriter in the Sisko Museum. It appears Benjamin Sisko’s life contains secrets beyond what SAM uncovered during her investigation, as she only explored connections related to the relics she studied.
