I was surprised to hear that Riot is scaling back the team working on 2XKO. While the game has generally been a success for them, they’ve decided to make a pretty big cut to the team size. It’s a little concerning, but hopefully it won’t impact the game too much.
Tom Cannon, the executive producer of 2XKO, shared a heartfelt message explaining that while the game’s release on consoles pleased its dedicated fans, it didn’t generate enough ongoing interest to support the team working on it long-term.
We noticed clear patterns in how people were playing 2XKO. While a dedicated group of players really enjoys the game, it hasn’t gained enough widespread popularity to justify the current development team size in the long run.
Those affected by the layoffs, known internally as “Rioters,” will receive a good severance package and continued pay while they look for other positions within the company. Cannon stressed that this decision was a strategic one, and praised the skills of those leaving. He also assured fans that the development team will continue working towards the planned 2026 Competitive Series for the game, and that exciting new content is coming for players who enjoy the fast-paced combat in 2XKO.
We’re streamlining our team to focus on making important improvements to the game, addressing feedback we’ve received from players. We’ll be sharing details about our plans shortly.
It’s definitely tough to hear about layoffs happening in gaming right now, but I’m still really hopeful for 2XKO. I think it has the potential to be a great competitive esport, and I’m excited to see what the new team does with it. From what I’ve seen, 2XKO looks like it’s going to make a big impact in 2026 – I’m expecting some awesome things!
