3 Anime That Changed Animation Studios & Were Better for It

It’s not unusual for anime to switch animation studios, but it can be a gamble. Fans often get attached to a particular art style, and a new studio might tell the story in a different way. This has caused problems for shows like One-Punch Man and The Seven Deadly Sins when they changed studios. However, a studio switch can sometimes actually improve a series – it really depends on how well the transition is managed.

Sometimes, when an anime series switches studios, it also gets a fresh direction for its story, and the two changes work together seamlessly. Other times, a new studio brings its own unique take on the original material, leading to improvements. Several long-running and popular anime, including a fantasy series with over 300 episodes and a major action series from the last twenty years, have seen positive changes after moving to a different studio.

3) Fairy Tail

The anime Fairy Tail was first produced with help from Satelight, but A-1 Pictures eventually took over, later collaborating with Bridge. This change actually improved the show, as Bridge prioritized staying true to the original manga in both how it looked and how the story unfolded. They used less filler content, and the characters and events felt more accurate to the source material. The shift also corrected some visual designs that had strayed from the manga. As the series became more intense and dealt with more serious topics, the change in art style – with its more subdued colors and clearer images – felt like a better fit.

2) Vinland Saga

The first season of Vinland Saga was created by Wit Studio, and MAPPA took on the second season. Both seasons were exceptionally well-made, but MAPPA’s work particularly suited the story’s shift towards a more mature and thoughtful tone. Vinland Saga evolved from a revenge-driven adventure filled with Viking battles to a quieter, more introspective story – though it still has plenty of action! The animation style in Season 2 felt more refined and realistic, mirroring Thorfinn’s growth and changing outlook, and it handled both intimate moments and large-scale battles effectively.

1) Attack on Titan

Similar to Vinland Saga, Attack on Titan switched animation studios during a crucial part of its story, and the new style actually improved the show, especially after the time jump. Interestingly, Attack on Titan also moved from Wit Studio, which handled the first three seasons, to MAPPA for its final, multi-part arc. Wit Studio did a fantastic job with the early seasons, delivering bright visuals, exciting action, and a close adaptation of the manga. MAPPA maintained the strong action, but their darker, more realistic style was a better fit for the increasingly grim tone of the series as the characters learned about the world beyond their walls.
