3 First-Party Nintendo Games That Still Need Switch 2 Editions (& Why We Don’t Have Them Yet)

With the release of the Switch 2, a lot of games have received updated versions. Some, like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, were updated for free. However, most games have been released as improved Switch 2 editions that players can purchase for around $10. While a few completely new games have come to the Switch 2, many of this year’s first-party releases are actually upgraded versions of existing popular titles.

Nintendo plans to continue releasing updated versions of popular Switch games for the Switch 2. The new edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2026. While many major Nintendo Switch games have already been re-released or announced for the Switch 2, some notable titles are still missing. Let’s take a look at the biggest first-party Nintendo games that haven’t been confirmed for the Switch 2 yet, and explore the possible reasons why.

3) 1, 2 Switch

The game 1, 2 Switch was one of the first titles available when the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017. It was a party game designed to highlight the motion controls of the Joy-Con controllers. While reviews were mixed, it was a popular choice for parties and sold well. A sequel, Everybody 1, 2 Switch, was released in 2023.

Considering the game was released with the original Switch, it’s unexpected that we haven’t seen an updated version for the Switch 2, either of the original or its sequel. Instead, we received Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, which feels more like a demonstration than a full game. Even after several months since the Switch 2 launched, there’s still no proper update to this classic party game. It’s unclear why Nintendo hasn’t revisited the series, perhaps because they don’t believe the new Joy-Cons offer enough improvement to justify a remake. Alternatively, Nintendo might have shifted its focus to other motion-based games like WarioWare and popular titles like Fitness Boxing 3.

2) Pikmin 4 

Ever since the new Nintendo console was first hinted at, people have been speculating about an updated version of Pikmin 4 for it. A strange teaser video released by Nintendo only fueled those expectations. However, instead of announcing a new version, Nintendo released a free update for the original Pikmin 4. While the update includes new features, it isn’t designed specifically for the new console.

It’s unclear why Nintendo hasn’t released a Switch 2 version of Pikmin 4. Some fans believe the company is prioritizing the mobile game, Pikmin Bloom, and that’s why. The latest update to Pikmin 4 even adds features originally found in the mobile version. Another possibility is that Nintendo is already working on Pikmin 5 for the Switch 2 and is concentrating its efforts there instead of re-releasing Pikmin 4.

1) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The latest Super Smash Bros. game was released in 2018, around the same time as the first Nintendo Switch. Despite being several years old, Nintendo hasn’t announced an upgraded version for the highly popular series on the new Switch console. Many fans are surprised that Super Smash Bros. hasn’t been discussed much in connection with the new system.

Considering when Ultimate was released, it all makes sense. While some fans would like to see Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on a Switch 2, many of us are eager for the next game in the series. Since the last Super Smash Bros. game came out about a year after the original Switch launched, we could see a brand new Super Smash Bros. for the Switch 2 within the next year. Personally, I’d rather have a completely new game than just an updated version of the old one.
