I’ve been watching *The Simpsons* for years, and it’s amazing how it’s stayed so popular! It was a huge phenomenon in its early days, and even though fewer people might tune in now, it’s still funny after over 30 seasons. Of course, the Simpsons family themselves are legendary, but what I really love is how the show built up this incredible supporting cast. The whole town of Springfield feels so alive and quirky, and those characters are just as important to the show’s success as Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. They really make *The Simpsons* special!
While *The Simpsons* has occasionally featured sad characters, it’s primarily a funny show. Over its many years, there have been tons of hilarious moments, often thanks to characters who aren’t main players. Despite providing some of the show’s funniest scenes, these supporting characters often have small roles and aren’t featured much throughout *The Simpsons*’ long history.
3) Ian (The Very Tall Man)
Ian, often called the Very Tall Man, first appeared in the classic Simpsons episode “22 Short Films About Springfield” and has made a few brief appearances since. Though he’s shown up several times, he usually appears in the background as a silent character. He’s visually based on Simpsons writer Ian Maxtone-Graham, but is also remembered for his unusual voice and the comically large vehicle he drives.
The Very Tall Man immediately stands out as a hilarious character. He surprisingly gets the better of Nelson Muntz, the school bully on *The Simpsons*, publicly humiliating him because he can’t stand bullies himself. While his humor comes mostly from how he looks and sounds, it’s the sheer silliness of the character that really makes him great. Despite appearing only a few times, the Very Tall Man has become one of the show’s most memorable minor characters.
2) Chester J. Lampwick
Chester J. Lampwick, voiced by Kirk Douglas, first appeared in the season 7 episode “The Day the Violence Died” and remains a beloved character on *The Simpsons*. He’s primarily known for creating the cartoon mouse, Itchy, and this connection forms the basis of his one major role in the show. While he made brief, almost unnoticeable appearances in two other episodes, it was his main appearance that allowed him to shine as a truly funny character.
In the *Simpsons* episode “The Day the Violence Died,” Chester is involved in some of the show’s most memorable recurring jokes. He’s known for starting fights with people he used to work for, all because he thought their food wasn’t good enough. Beyond this, Chester’s years of living on the streets have given him strange habits that make him a peculiar guest for the Simpsons. His backstory, connected to the history of animation, also allows the show to playfully satirize the art form, making his character, Lampwick, surprisingly funny despite appearing in only one major episode.
1) The Yes Guy
I just love the Yes Guy from *The Simpsons*! He’s become such a memorable character, even though he first showed up a bit later in the show’s golden years, in the episode “Mayored to the Mob.” He doesn’t usually have a big part to play in the stories, but that’s what makes his quick appearances so hilarious – he just pops up out of nowhere, always announcing himself with that iconic “Yes!” It always gets a laugh from me.
The character known as the Yes Guy—whose real name is Mr. Pettigrew—reportedly developed his unusual way of speaking after a stroke. Though his life story could be quite tragic, he’s become one of the funniest minor characters on *The Simpsons*. He’s often introduced from behind, and then reveals himself with his overly enthusiastic greeting, which usually irritates or surprises whoever he’s talking to. It’s a simple, but highly effective running gag, and the Yes Guy is a prime example of how *The Simpsons* continues to deliver laughs thanks to its memorable supporting characters.
