2025 hasn’t been a particularly strong year for science fiction films. As usual, superhero movies dominate, with *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* following the familiar plot of a family battling an intergalactic villain who eats planets. Beyond the big superhero franchises, a couple of films have impressed, notably Bong Joon-ho’s *Mickey 17*, starring Robert Pattinson. This movie centers on a man who’s repeatedly cloned and finds love. However, while it includes Joon-ho’s signature social commentary, it doesn’t quite live up to the quality of his previous work.
So far this year, there haven’t been any truly standout blockbuster movies. That means the last two months of the year are crucial, and thankfully, 2025 is ending strong with a promising lineup of films. Here are three major sci-fi movies coming out soon, ranked from most to least anticipated.
3) The Running Man

As a huge fan of both Stephen King and Edgar Wright, I was thrilled to hear they’re chatting about Wright’s new movie, *The Running Man*. It stars Glenn Powell, William H. Macy, Lee Pace, and a bunch of other great actors. The basic idea is really cool: it’s set in the future, and this TV show offers people a shot at fame and fortune, but only if they can survive for thirty days while being hunted down by killers. It sounds like a wild ride!
I’m really excited about the new *Running Man* project! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to stick closely to Stephen King’s original novel – the one he wrote as Richard Bachman – and thankfully, it won’t be a rehash of the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. That film was okay, but it kind of lost the story. This time, though, it sounds like we’re getting *all* of King’s crazy twists and turns, which should really surprise people who are just expecting a simple action movie.
2) Predator: Badlands

The classic sci-fi franchises *Alien* and *Predator*, both popular in the 1980s, are experiencing a resurgence. Recent installments like *Alien: Romulus* and *Alien: Earth* have brought the terrifying Xenomorph back into the spotlight, and *Prey* and *Predator: Killer of Killers* have done the same for the Yautja. The upcoming film *Predator: Badlands* aims to continue this momentum with a story set on a planet of hunters, centering on a rogue Predator who doesn’t play by the rules.
Director Dan Trachtenberg has made it clear he’s a sci-fi enthusiast, and his new movie, *Badlands*, will have a significant link to the *Alien* franchise. Elle Fanning will play a synthetic being created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, a key element in the *Alien* universe. Trachtenberg doesn’t want viewers expecting a direct crossover between *Predator* and *Alien*, but promises plenty of hidden references for dedicated fans to discover.
1) Avatar: Fire and Ash

James Cameron is a highly accomplished filmmaker, and he continues to create groundbreaking work with the *Avatar* franchise. Following a long wait after the first movie, the third installment, *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, is coming to theaters just three years after the second.
The next *Avatar* movie, *Fire and Ash*, continues the story immediately after *The Way of Water*, with Jake Sully and his family grieving a loss. They won’t have much time to mourn, however, as they’ll soon be facing a new conflict with a group known as the Ash People. The trailer for *Fire and Ash* looks incredible, and director James Cameron is clearly planning to take the *Avatar* saga in exciting new directions with this third film.
