Playing video games with others has come a long way. It started with simple two-player setups and has grown into huge online battles with hundreds of players worldwide. While most games try to make characters equally powerful, some stand out as being too strong or unfair, frustrating opponents. We’ve picked three of the most notorious examples and are presenting them in the order they were originally released.
1) Oddjob – GoldenEye 007 (1997)

GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 was a game-changer for first-person shooters, especially thanks to its fantastic multiplayer. Playing with friends was a blast, but one character always caused a stir: Oddjob. Because of his short height, Oddjob had an unfair advantage, and the simple controls of the N64 made him even harder to target. Almost every group of friends had a rule—either spoken or unspoken—against anyone picking Oddjob. He’s likely the first character that came to mind when you read the title of this article.
2) Yoda – Soulcalibur IV (2008)

The Soulcalibur series often struggles with balance when adding characters from other franchises, and Yoda in Soulcalibur IV is a prime example. He was originally exclusive to the Xbox 360 version, while Darth Vader appeared on PlayStation 3, though Yoda was later available as downloadable content. Similar to the character Oddjob, Yoda’s small stature gave him a considerable edge – he was hard to hit, and opponents found it difficult to land attacks. He moved with the quick, acrobatic style seen in the Star Wars prequels, making him frustrating to fight and ultimately, unbalanced.
3) Meta Knight – Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008)

You’re probably starting to see a trend – our third pick is Meta Knight from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Like our previous choices, he’s relatively small, but that’s not the main reason he made the list. Meta Knight is exceptionally fast with all of his attacks, making him very hard to defeat. This speed gave him a significant advantage on both offense and defense, with powerful moves that made him a dangerous, whirling force. Players widely agreed he was overpowered, and this was confirmed when Meta Knight became the first character banned from competitive play.
