WWE is currently without several prominent stars who regularly appeared on TV and don’t seem likely to return in the near future. Although current stars like Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns (who recently returned) are still headlining, many who were major attractions just last year are now absent. This isn’t unusual – sometimes wrestlers step away when there aren’t any immediate storylines for them, and injuries also play a role. For example, Chad Gable is currently sidelined due to injury, and Santos Escobar briefly became a free agent before re-signing with WWE in October.
Three popular WWE stars are currently absent from main events. Here’s a look at why they’re missing and when fans might see them back in action.
3) Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens hasn’t appeared on WWE television since April 4, 2025. He was scheduled to wrestle Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41, but two weeks before the event, he appeared on SmackDown to announce he’d suffered a serious neck injury. This required surgery and means he’ll be unable to wrestle for the foreseeable future. Owens’ last match was at Elimination Chamber in March 2025.
Kevin Owens had successful neck surgery in July and is now focused on recovery. While he hopes to be back wrestling in WWE around 2026, he’s not rushing things and wants to make sure his recovery is complete. The 41-year-old is staying positive as he works his way back. Owens has a decorated career in WWE, having previously held the Universal, NXT, Intercontinental (twice), United States (three times), and Tag Team championships.
2) Naomi

So, like a lot of wrestlers, Naomi’s also currently not wrestling, but her situation is way different than Kevin Owens’. She had a fantastic run turning heel – basically becoming a villain – after betraying Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair. It all paid off when she won the women’s title at WWE Evolution in July, cashing in her Money in the Bank contract. Unfortunately, her time as champion didn’t last too long. She showed up on Monday Night Raw on August 18th, 2025, to make a big announcement, and that ended her title reign.
Naomi is healthy and recently revealed she’s expecting a baby with Jimmy Uso. Although her championship run lasted only 36 days, she plans to return after the baby is born and win the title again. Her last match was on August 3, 2025, at SummerSlam, where she defeated Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky in a three-way match. With her baby due in May 2027, she’s expected to return to wrestling sometime after WrestleMania the following year.
1) Gunther

Gunther has been a top performer in WWE for several years, first making a name for himself in NXT UK where he was champion for an impressive 870 days. After moving to the United States in 2021, he quickly found success on the main roster, winning the Intercontinental Championship and holding it for 666 days until April 2024. He then became the WWE World Champion, winning the title twice over a total of 311 days before losing it to CM Punk in August 2025.
Since joining the main WWE roster in April 2021, Gunther held the championship for almost all of that time, only losing it for about seven months. He hasn’t been seen in WWE since losing the title to Punk, and it was revealed shortly after that he’d had surgeries to address some long-delayed health issues. While there’s no confirmed date for his return, he’s expected to come back as soon as doctors clear him following his recovery.
