A new preview of the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max has revealed several additions to the magical world, including at least three creatures never seen in the original films. Because the show will have eight-episode seasons, the creators have more time to adapt the novels, allowing them to include characters and storylines that couldn’t fit into the movies’ two-hour runtime. This expanded format means fans can expect a richer, more detailed experience with plenty of new and exciting elements.
The documentary Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic featured an interview with the designers who created the creatures for the Harry Potter films. They explained that everything was built and achieved with practical effects, not computer-generated imagery. The segment also showcased three creatures – the Jobberknoll, Flobberworms, and Fire Crabs – that hadn’t appeared in the original movies.
Here’s a sneak peek at some of the magical creatures appearing in the first season of the new Harry Potter TV series: Jobberknolls, Flobberworms, and Fire Crabs. The creature effects—especially the animatronics—were really amazing!

Harry Potter HBO Max Series to Use Practical Creature Effects

John Nolan, a veteran of the original Harry Potter films, is also working on the HBO Max series. He explained that his team designs and builds everything from iconic details like student owls to creatures such as Ron’s rat, Scabbers, and even less familiar beings like Flobberworms. They bring these creations to life using a mix of practical animatronics and special effects. During a presentation, they showcased some of these effects in action, including Hedwig and the Fire Crabs.
As a huge fan of the wizarding world, I’m thrilled to hear the upcoming HBO Max series will finally bring some lesser-seen creatures to life on screen! We’re going to get our first look at the Jobberknoll, Flobberworms, and Fire Crabs – creatures I’ve only read about! The Jobberknoll is a fascinating little blue bird that’s completely silent during its life, but apparently lets out a backwards replay of every sound it’s ever heard when it dies. It actually debuted in the Fantastic Beasts movie, but I’m excited to see more of it. And the Flobberworms! They’re these toothless, slimy brown worms that first showed up in the Prisoner of Azkaban book, and the preview footage definitely highlighted just how slimy they are! I can’t wait to see them all brought to life.
The Fire Crabs were particularly memorable, and the behind-the-scenes book Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic revealed a lot about them. These magical creatures resemble large tortoises, with jewels embedded in their shells. As their name suggests, they breathe fire from their rear ends! A clip from the making-of showed a Fire Crab in a shop window in Diagon Alley, demonstrating this fiery blast using practical effects. They’ve also appeared in several Harry Potter video games as enemies for players to defeat. In the books, Fire Crabs were first introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
