3 Theories About Kali’s Role in Stranger Things Season 5 After Eleven’s Sister Finally Returned

The first part of the final season of Stranger Things raised the tension in Hawkins, especially for our beloved characters, all within just four episodes. A surprising return came from Kali, also known as Eight – Eleven’s “sister” from Hawkins Lab. She appeared unexpectedly at the end of Episode 4, “Sorcerer,” held captive and used as a test subject in a military facility within the Upside Down. Though her story was only briefly shown in Season 2, Kali possesses powerful mental abilities, allowing her to control minds and create illusions, which is why she was part of Dr. Brenner’s experiments as a child. Kali’s skills could be a major advantage in the fight against Vecna and the Mind Flayer, but they also come with risks. With her return and the discovery that Will has also developed powers, the final battle against Vecna will likely involve a three-way confrontation between Will, Eleven, and Kali.

But the big question is: will Kali’s return be just a quick appearance, a distraction, or will she actually be crucial – and maybe even surprising – in preventing the world’s destruction?

3) Vecna Already Corrupted Kali

The location where Hopper and Eleven find Kali – a hidden military base in the Upside Down – suggests she’s been there much longer than we think. We only know Eleven spent a short time with Kali in November 1984 during Season 2. Now, with Season 5 taking place in 1987, Kali’s been missing for three years. Even more concerning, we don’t know how long she’s been exposed to the Upside Down, which raises a disturbing possibility.

Considering the Mind Flayer’s control over others and Vecna’s exploitation of past pain, it’s possible Kali was corrupted a long time ago, even before the scientists discovered her. Her ability to create illusions would be incredibly useful to Vecna, allowing her to act as a hidden agent disguised as a friend. If Kali is working against them, it would be devastating for the group. She could disrupt their plans with illusions, lure them into danger, or, most alarmingly, use her powers to mentally weaken Eleven and Will, making them easy targets for Vecna’s final attack.

2) Kali’s Power Will Be the Key to Defeating Vecna For Good

Kali’s abilities are mainly about protection and using fear to control others, which is different from Eleven and Will, who can cause destruction. Her power to create illusions fits well with the Dungeons & Dragons inspiration of the show and might be crucial for getting past Vecna’s mental defenses. She could trick Vecna into coming out of hiding by making him think he’s safe. Or, she could send an illusion directly into the Mind Flayer’s shared consciousness. This might give the original Henry Creel—if any part of him still exists within Vecna—a chance to break free or regain control.

Kali’s power to create illusions is the Hawkins group’s best weapon against Vecna, who fights by preying on people’s painful memories and feelings of guilt. Their plan involves a three-part attack: Kali would start by mentally disorienting Vecna, followed by Eleven using her powers for a direct assault, and finally, Will leveraging his link to the Upside Down’s network. This combined approach aims to strike at Vecna’s mind, physical form, and connection to the alternate dimension.

1) Kali’s Questionable Morality Will Cause Infighting

Because Kali has often used her powers fueled by anger to get revenge – even resorting to murder and theft – she might not be as trustworthy as Eleven expects. Kali’s real motivation might not be to save the world, but to use the current situation to her own advantage. She could be seeking revenge on those who imprisoned her, or even trying to permanently separate the dimensions to guarantee her own freedom.

A clash between Eleven and Kali would create a lot of tension in an already dangerous situation. While Eleven completely trusts Kali, others – like Hopper and Mike – are more cautious. They see Kali as unpredictable and worry her powers and behavior could put the mission at risk. Her arrival could lead to conflicts not only with Vecna, but also force the group to confront the ethical implications of relying on people with troubled pasts to fight a bigger battle.
