3 Theories About Who & Where Dunk Is During A Song of Ice and Fire After Game of Thrones Canon Change

Recent comments from actor Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Ser Duncan the Tall, have changed what fans believed about the character’s place in the overall Game of Thrones story. It appears Dunk might actually be hidden within the pages of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, prompting fans to re-examine the series for clues. Be warned: spoilers follow regarding the future of Dunk and Egg in Westeros.

Most readers first meet Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon Targaryen (known as Egg) in the Dunk and Egg novellas. However, George R.R. Martin reveals what happens to them later in his other books, like the main A Song of Ice and Fire series and The World of Ice and Fire. These works show that Egg eventually becomes king after several deaths within the Targaryen family. Martin also strongly suggests that both Dunk and Egg die during a disastrous event called the Tragedy at Summerhall, which takes place in 259 AC.

Though George R.R. Martin doesn’t reveal much about what happens, we know the story involves Egg trying to revive dragons – and using wildfire in the process. Because of this, Dunk and Egg are initially believed to be dead. However, according to an interview with Decider, the actor playing Dunk was told by George R.R. Martin himself that Dunk will survive. It’s still uncertain if Egg will make it. If Dunk does live, it opens up many possibilities for his future, and he could potentially appear in A Song of Ice and Fire. However, considering the timing of events, he might still die before the main story begins.

3) Ser Duncan the Tall Is in Tarth

A popular theory suggests that Dunk, after surviving the fire at Summerhall, may have traveled to Tarth. George R.R. Martin previously indicated a connection between Dunk’s lineage and a character in A Song of Ice and Fire, later confirmed to be Brienne of Tarth. Given this connection, and the fact that Brienne eventually possesses Dunk’s shield, it seems likely he journeyed to Tarth sometime after the events of The Hedge Knight. This isn’t shown in the existing novellas, so it could have happened after the tragedy. If Dunk outlives Egg, he probably wouldn’t continue serving as a Kingsguard. Perhaps he went to Tarth to grieve and spend his later years, which would explain why he isn’t seen in A Song of Ice and Fire.

2) Dunk Could Become Coldhands

I’ve been thinking a lot about what happens to Dunk after the Tragedy at Summerhall, and it’s so sad imagining him just quietly grieving Egg. But other fans have some really interesting theories! I was on Reddit and saw people speculating that he could actually be Coldhands, the mysterious figure who helps Sam and Bran beyond the Wall. In the show, it’s Benjen Stark, but in the books, George R.R. Martin hasn’t revealed Coldhands’ identity yet. Considering Coldhands is basically undead, it doesn’t seem that crazy to think it could be Dunk, even if he’d be over a hundred years old by then!

While there’s not much proof Dunk is actually Coldhands, the descriptions of Coldhands don’t quite match up with Dunk – for instance, Coldhands is described as being short in stature. However, Dunk’s guilt over losing Egg could be a reason for him to join the Night’s Watch, and he might even seek out Brynden Rivers (Bloodraven) while there. One fan has also noted a similarity in how both Dunk and Coldhands use the word “monster” in different stories. It’s a compelling idea, but it feels like a bit of a long shot.

1) Reunited With Rohanne Webber

There’s a chance Dunk could cross paths with Rohanne Webber again, as long as he doesn’t go beyond the Wall or to Tarth. They first meet in the story The Sworn Sword, where Dunk tries to settle a disagreement between Rohanne, who is the Lady of Coldmoat, and Ser Eustace Osgrey. During this time, they become attracted to each other, but Rohanne ends up marrying Eustace. Even after that, Dunk keeps a lock of her hair and continues to think about her, showing he still has feelings for her.

I’ve always been fascinated by Rohanne. After marrying Gerold Lannister, she just disappeared around 230 AC, and no one ever found out what happened to her. Some fans think Dunk might somehow stumble across her, which feels a bit far-fetched, honestly. It’s hard to imagine how he’d even begin to look for her so long after she vanished. Still, given everything that happens in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it’s not impossible they could meet. It would be great to see some good fortune finally come his way!
