After nearly a century, there’s still a strong appeal for zombie movies. In 2025, Alex Garland and Danny Boyle brought back the 28 Days Later franchise with a sequel titled 28 Years Later, pushing the series to new levels of excellence. Even the Marvel universe, known as the biggest franchise globally, is introducing zombies in the upcoming animated series Marvel Zombies in 2025. However, what’s most thrilling for the genre is Paramount’s decision to potentially produce a sequel to World War Z, the 2013 film starring Brad Pitt.
There have been several efforts to expand Gerry Lane’s tale, but nothing substantial has ever taken flight. Regardless of whether this is just another instance of Paramount jumping the gun, it’s still worth reminiscing about the brilliance of Marc Forster’s movie. Here are three instances that underscore why World War Z stood out among zombie films.
3) The Stakes Are Very Real
In contrast to typical zombie films, World War Z plunges viewers straight into the heart of the chaos. Gerry, accompanied by his family, finds themselves amidst a violent episode in Philadelphia, with people turning against each other. This unexpected situation compels them to seize an RV and flee. Fortunately, Gerry’s previous role as a UN investigator grants him valuable connections that help ensure their safety. Following an encounter with some zombies, they manage to board a ship where military personnel are diligently searching for a cure for the virus.
The government only has a possible lead they wish to explore, and given his expertise, they ask Gerry – who isn’t enthusiastic about the assignment – to go along. However, when he learns that his family will be removed from the ship if he refuses, he finds himself with no other option. In the movie “World War Z,” this forced decision intensifies the tension on the boat, mirroring the danger off it, as everyone’s lives hang in the balance due to the ticking clock.
2) The Zombies Are Some of the Scariest Ever
In Philadelphia’s chaotic scenario, it becomes evident that the zombies portrayed in World War Z are no laughing matter. They relentlessly pursue healthy individuals to infect, demonstrating an alarming level of determination. Yet, Gerry only fully comprehends the gravity of the situation upon reaching Jerusalem – a city unique in its preparedness for the outbreak. Authorities there share with Gerry that they treated zombie reports seriously and put precautions in place; however, these measures falter when undead beings start cooperating.
When an excess of urban noise reaches the ears of the zombies, they start constructing a towering structure with their bodies, enabling some to leap over the city’s walls. Just a handful managing to breach the wall is enough to cause pandemonium throughout the city, leaving Gerry with no choice but to escape. The reckless abandon with which these creatures charge makes one crave watching something like Zombieland, where the monsters struggle to move without tripping over their own feet.
1) The Solution Doesn’t Make the Entire Problem Go Away
In my role as an avid film enthusiast, I found myself in an unexpected horror flick of sorts when boarding a plane from Jerusalem. Little did I know that a terrifying zombie was lurking onboard, causing chaos that led to our tragic crash landing. Miraculously, I survived and managed to make it to my destination – a World Health Organization facility nestled in the heart of Wales.
Now, I found myself pondering an intriguing theory – that zombies avoid terminally ill individuals due to their perception of them as contaminated flesh. Eager to put this theory to the test, I set out on a mission within the confines of this secure facility.
Following his last confrontation with the undead, Gerry resorts to injecting himself with a disease and approaches a zombie. Surprisingly, the creature disregards him, providing an opportunity for Gerry to collect more samples for the doctors nearby. The swift creation of a vaccine marks the start of a healing world. However, the conclusion of World War Z underscores that the battle is far from over, leaving room for potential future conflicts, regardless of whether a sequel materializes. It’s refreshing to witness a movie that refrains from wrapping up all loose ends in a tidy package.
