The second movie adaptation of the hit musical Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good, was released in theaters this weekend. The film continues the story from the second act of the Broadway show, finally bringing Elphaba and Glinda’s complex relationship to a satisfying conclusion. We see how they went from being unexpected roommates to becoming famous figures in Oz, including Elphaba’s apparent death and Glinda’s ascent to power. While this chapter wraps up a beloved fantasy story, the world of Oz is vast, and it seems likely that more stories will be told beyond the events of For Good.
Although the musical provides a satisfying conclusion, its unresolved storylines and extensive backstory create exciting possibilities for future films. These films could expand on the complex ideas of morality, evil, and power within the world of Oz and the Emerald City.
3) Adapting the Rest of Gregory Maguire’s Books into Films

Before becoming a Broadway hit, Wicked started as a novel by Gregory Maguire. The musical version is much more lighthearted and geared towards families than Maguire’s original, more mature book. But Maguire didn’t stop at just one novel – he continued the Wicked series, and future films could be based on these later books. They could start with Son of a Witch or even Maguire’s newest book, Elphie, which is a prequel about Elphaba’s childhood and will be released in 2025. Using these novels for future films would stay true to the source material while exploring stories beyond the well-known tale of Elphaba and Glinda.
Maguire’s follow-up novels expand the world of Oz, following characters like Liir, the son of Elphaba and Fiyero, and examining the lasting political consequences of the Wizard’s defeat. This shift transforms the series from a story primarily about two characters into a larger, more complex fantasy saga exploring the history of Oz and tackling more serious subjects.
2) An Elphaba and Fiyero Standalone Film

Since both the movie and stage show reveal Elphaba didn’t actually die – she and Fiyero (who she unintentionally transformed into the Scarecrow) secretly ran away together – a new story could focus on their life after leaving Oz. Their disappearance offers a fresh start to explore a completely new and seemingly empty world, allowing for adventures and challenges in a previously unseen setting.
This idea would let us see a deeper, more personal story of Fiyero and Elphaba finding happiness despite the difficult aftermath of the events in Wicked. Because the musical only briefly shows their love story, a separate movie could really explore what brought them together, instead of relying on just a few short scenes. It could also delve into how they cope with Fiyero’s transformation, Elphaba’s powers, and the sadness of leaving Glinda believing they’ve died, all while trying to build a quiet life away from the drama of the Emerald City.
1) A Direct Sequel Focusing on Glinda

The ending of For Good departs from the original Broadway musical, strongly hinting at a potential sequel. Glinda finally embraces her power and takes control, removing the corrupt Wizard and Madame Morrible. She becomes a genuine leader for Oz, fulfilling Elphaba’s vision of positive change. A sequel could explore Glinda’s reign as she works to build a safe and inclusive Oz for everyone, including those who were previously mistreated – both people and Animals.
At the end of For Good, the Grimerie opens for Glinda, showing she’s developed a powerful new ability similar to Elphaba’s – a capacity for meaningful, impactful magic. A future story could explore her attempts to continue Elphaba’s work while still keeping her promise not to reveal Elphaba’s true story. This would allow Glinda to finally use magic not just for simple tricks, but to truly embody the goodness her name, Glinda the Good, implies.
