As a huge movie fan, I’ve been following Henry Cavill‘s time as Superman, and honestly, the last week or so has been more dramatic than his entire nine years playing the role! When he first appeared in Man of Steel, it was a bit divisive. Zack Snyder went for a really different, darker take on the character, and that infamous scene where Superman had to defeat Zod… well, it wasn’t what everyone expected. Man of Steel wasn’t a bad film, not at all, but it didn’t make as much money as Warner Bros. hoped, and I think that really pushed them to try and build a connected DC universe too quickly, which, looking back, didn’t really pan out.
Following underwhelming reviews and box office results for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, Henry Cavill’s status as Superman became uncertain. There were conflicting reports about his involvement, but he briefly reprised the role in a post-credits scene for Black Adam after a five-year gap (excluding his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League). He celebrated the return on social media, but shortly after, news broke that James Gunn and Peter Safran were taking control of DC Studios, effectively ending his comeback before it could gain momentum.
What Was Henry Cavill’s Superman Return Setting Up?
People really wanted Henry Cavill to reprise his role as Superman, and that’s what ultimately led to his appearance in Black Adam. Even after the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, there was a strong, separate campaign for Cavill to return as the Man of Steel. The desire was so intense that Dwayne Johnson received boos at Comic-Con when he hinted it probably wouldn’t happen. Following that negative reaction, a deal was made to include Cavill in a post-credits scene, suggesting future collaborations between him and Johnson were planned.
At the end of the movie, Superman acknowledges that Black Adam has the world on edge, and suggests they need to discuss things. Rumors of a fight between Black Adam and Superman have been circulating for a while – even though Black Adam usually fights Shazam, he’s battled Superman before. A movie starring both Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and Henry Cavill as Superman would have been a guaranteed hit if Black Adam had performed better at the box office.
For years, a sequel to Man of Steel had been discussed, with directors like Matthew Vaughn and Christopher McQuarrie exploring ideas and villains like Brainiac considered. Had Black Adam been successful and the leadership at DC remained as Dwayne Johnson expected, a proper sequel starring Henry Cavill as Superman would probably have been made.
DC Moved On From Henry Cavill Despite His Return – And It Was The Right Call
News broke on October 25th, 2022, that James Gunn and Peter Safran were now in charge of DC Studios. The DC franchise needed a fresh start after several films hadn’t performed well at the box office, and this change signaled trouble for Henry Cavill. It quickly became clear the studio was moving in a new direction, and a couple of months later, it was confirmed they wouldn’t be continuing with Cavill as Superman. They planned to reboot the character with a new actor.
It’s tough timing for Henry Cavill, honestly. He never truly got the chance to be Superman, and that’s a real shame. The whole DC Universe had its problems, preventing it from fully taking off, but Cavill wasn’t one of them. I really wanted to see him fully embody that classic, hopeful Superman – the ‘Big Blue Boy Scout’ – but it just wasn’t in the cards. Looking back, it feels inevitable, even if it’s disappointing.
Look, the previous DC movies just had too much weighing them down, and James Gunn and Peter Safran really needed to start fresh if they wanted to turn things around. While some stuff, like John Cena as Peacemaker, could carry over, the main heroes – the Justice League – needed a complete reboot to get audiences excited again. And honestly, Superman in 2025 totally proved they made the right decision! It did great in theaters, it was a fantastic Superman movie, and David Corenswet is just brilliant in the role. It’s given the new DC Universe a really strong foundation as a movie franchise, and I’m hoping it just keeps getting better and better. This isn’t about Henry Cavill at all – it was just time to leave the past behind and build something new.
While Henry Cavill won’t be Superman going forward, there’s still a chance he could appear in another role within the DC Universe – he and James Gunn have discussed it, though nothing is currently planned. Many fans would be thrilled to see him return, as his portrayal of Superman felt incomplete and he’s a strong addition to any film series. Even if he doesn’t, his time as Superman remains a significant part of the character’s history.
Henry Cavill’s DC movies, including Man of Steel, are available to stream on HBO Max.
