Founded in 2000, Ufotable is an animation studio responsible for a number of distinctive anime movies and series. While already respected in the industry before adapting Demon Slayer, they weren’t as widely recognized as established studios like Toei Animation or more recent success stories like MAPPA (known for hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan). However, Ufotable’s popularity has grown significantly, and they’re now famous for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which became the highest-grossing anime film ever. Beyond Demon Slayer, they’re also well-known for their work on the Fate series and Tales of Zestiria the Cross, among other projects.
Fans were excited when the studio posted an update about the Genshin Impact anime. However, there’s been no news about Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu Movie since its second trailer was released in December 2022. While the teaser and visuals look great, the lack of updates is worrying, especially considering this is intended to be a large-scale project, and may indicate production difficulties.
What Is Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu About?

This series is inspired by the video game Touken Ranbu, a popular collectible card game created by Nitroplus and DMM Games. In 2017, an anime adaptation produced by Ufotable and Aniplex, and directed by Toshiyuki Shirai, was released. A manga version also appeared in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine, resulting in five volumes, though these were never translated into English.
In 1863, as the age of the samurai was ending and Japan was divided by conflict, a group of time travelers arrives from the future with a dangerous goal: to rewrite history. To prevent this from happening and save the world, two powerful warriors – spirits embodied in swords – race to Edo to protect the true course of events.
Horikawa Kunihiro is a courteous and considerate swordsman, quite different from his partner, Izuminokami Kanesada. Despite their contrasting personalities, they share a history of serving the same lord and recognize each other’s skills. Now, they must work together with other warriors to fight off an incoming invasion. The studio hasn’t revealed the story details for the new movie, and it’s unknown when more information will be released about the anime.
