Jim Carrey is famous for many successful movies, including beloved comedies like Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. Now, one of his lesser-known but popular funny films is getting a revival. After 30 years, it’s being reimagined as a series on Hulu, and it will star a fantastic pair of lead actors.
Jim Carrey’s often-overlooked comedy, The Cable Guy, is getting a potential revival. Deadline reports that Hulu has ordered a pilot episode for a new series based on the film. The pilot will star and be executive produced by Jake Johnson (from New Girl) and Damon Wayans Jr., with Sony Pictures Television handling production.
Everything We Know About Hulu’s The Cable Guy Series

Rob Rosell (known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas (Cobra Kai) are writing the pilot episode for a new TV show based on The Cable Guy. The creators are all fans of the original movie, and they plan to approach the series like Fargo did with its source material – expanding on the film’s story and tone for television.
The report indicates the upcoming Cable Guy series will more closely resemble the original film than the Fargo series did. Kevin Hart will take on the role of Chip Douglas – the same character Jim Carrey played in the movie – and Marlon Wayans Jr. will play Steven Stephens, a role originally portrayed by Matthew Broderick.
The show’s concept has been updated for today’s streaming world, as things have changed a lot since the original movie’s time when cable TV was dominant. The story centers around Douglas, a solitary cable technician, who reconnects with an old friend, Stephens, when Stephens requests service. Their initial reunion is pleasant, but Douglas quickly becomes obsessed, and the situation rapidly descends into chaos. Here’s the official series description for more details.
As someone who loves a good movie, I was hooked by the premise of this one. It’s about Chip, a cable guy who’s kind of stuck in a rut with all the streaming options out there. His life changes when Steven, an old friend from childhood, calls to get his cable reconnected. They quickly reconnect, and it’s great to see them filling a void in each other’s lives… but things take a seriously weird turn when Chip gets a little too enthusiastic. The movie really digs into the funny, but also unsettling, side of how men navigate friendship these days.
