As a critic who’s seen countless action and heist films, let me tell you, Heat remains in a league of its own. Michael Mann’s 1995 film, with Pacino and De Niro, is practically a perfect action movie – it’s a true masterpiece. You can really see its influence all over Christopher Nolan’s work, especially that incredible opening sequence in The Dark Knight. For years, nothing has quite captured that same energy, but a new film from Amazon MGM Studios is coming the closest I’ve seen yet. Amazon MGM dropped the first trailer for Crime 101 this Thursday. The new thriller is directed by Bart Layton and based on a story by popular crime novelist Don Winslow. Though Heat was famous for its stars Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer, the cast of Crime 101 is equally impressive. The film features a police officer and a robber played by two well-known actors who often appear together, but usually as teammates, not rivals.
The new film, Crime 101, brings together two famous Avengers: Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. Hemsworth plays a skilled thief who’s managed to stay one step ahead of the law, and Ruffalo is the determined detective trying to bring him in. The movie also features a strong supporting cast including Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte.
The trailer looks great, but viewers will have to wait until February 13, 2026, to see if the full movie, Crime 101, lives up to the hype.
What Is Crime 101 About?
Similar to the movie Heat, Crime 101 centers around a pursuit: a determined police officer trying to catch someone, and that person doing whatever it takes to complete their task. What makes this film interesting is the character played by Berry, an insurance broker who unexpectedly teams up with Hemsworth’s character, a thief, adding a new layer of complexity.
