I absolutely love Tombstone! It came out in 1993 and has an incredible cast – Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton… seriously, the list goes on with names like Michael Rooker and even Charlton Heston! The movie follows Wyatt Earp and his brothers as they head to Tombstone, Arizona, trying to bring some peace and justice to a town overrun by a really dangerous group of cowboys.
The movie initially opened in third place, but it eventually earned $73.2 million, far exceeding its $25 million budget. Although it got off to a slow start, positive reviews and recommendations helped it gain momentum. Many viewers praised Val Kilmer’s outstanding performance, and even President Bill Clinton was reportedly a fan. In fact, renowned film critic Roger Ebert shared that he went to see the movie specifically because he heard President Clinton enjoyed Kilmer’s work in the role.
How Tombstone Became A Modern Classic
Though reviews for Tombstone were initially mixed, the film has since gained a strong reputation. It’s now considered a definitive modern Western, successfully revitalizing the genre and setting a standard for many films that followed. Like other recent Westerns, Tombstone blends historical events, such as the famous O.K. Corral shootout, with fictional elements, continuing the tradition of legendary storytelling in a contemporary way.
