Most Marvel fans immediately think of Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson when they picture iconic weddings, but 32 years ago today, another wedding generated even more excitement. Marvel has featured several significant weddings over the years – some surprising, like Rogue and Gambit’s, and others historically important, such as Northstar and Kyle Jinadu’s, which was a groundbreaking same-sex marriage that modernized the Marvel Universe. However, like Spider-Man and Mary Jane, a couple destined to be together, another pair celebrated their own “Wedding of the Century.”
After years of fans hoping they’d get together, Scott Summers and Jean Grey finally got married in X-Men Vol. 2 #30 on January 18, 1994. These two characters first appeared in Uncanny X-Men and were often seen as a destined couple by creators like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. But their relationship faced many obstacles – Jean’s death, Scott’s marriage to a clone of her named Madelyne Pryor, and even having a child together – making a wedding seem impossible. That all changed 32 years ago when they finally said ‘I do’.
Cyclops and Jean Grey Got Married 32 Years Ago

The cover of X-Men Vol. 2 #30, which came out on January 18, 1994, showed Scott Summers and Jean Grey kissing on their wedding day, with the words “At Last! The Wedding of Scott Summers and Jean Grey!” emblazoned across it. However, comic book readers know that a happy cover like that often means trouble is brewing. The issue, written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Andy Kubert, began with Logan leaving a note for the newly married couple, wishing them well and explaining that he was leaving. He felt they deserved this happy moment.
Seeing Rachel Summers, the daughter of Scott and Jean from an alternate Earth, added a strange feeling as the wedding drew closer. Professor X even confessed to wondering if he was still needed, watching two former students tie the knot. Despite the underlying anxiety, the wedding itself was perfect. The story focused on Xavier’s thoughts as he observed Scott’s nerves, Jean’s joy, and Rachel’s discomfort, ultimately realizing that Scott and Jean had truly found happiness together.
The story concluded with a heartwarming scene: Jean used her telekinetic abilities to lift Professor X, allowing them to share a dance. She told him that if dancing with him brought her joy, and her mutant powers enabled it, she wouldn’t trade being a mutant for anything, and she was proud to dance with the man who had taught her so much. The story closed with Xavier reading a short, playful letter from Logan that simply said, “Hey Chuck, lighten up.” It was a beautiful and fitting end to a wonderful Marvel Comics wedding.
