35 Years Ago, a Forgotten ’90s Fantasy Cartoon Premiered (And We Need the Reboot Now)

I’m absolutely thrilled with how popular pirates have become in entertainment! It feels like we’ve always loved pirate stories, but recently we’ve seen some incredible new takes – Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and Black Sails really revitalized the genre, and One Piece anime is drawing in tons of new fans. Everyone’s excited for the next season of the One Piece live-action show on Netflix next month, but it got me thinking about a series that actually started this wave of modern pirate adventures thirty-five years ago. It’s a shame we never got a follow-up to that one!

Premiering in 1991, The Pirates of Dark Water was a popular and distinctive Saturday morning cartoon. The show centers on Ren, who gathers a crew of misfits to stop a spreading “dark water”—a dangerous black liquid threatening to consume the world. To halt its advance, Ren must find the “Thirteen Treasures of Rule” while battling both supernatural enemies and the pirate captain Bloth. Although the series ran for two seasons, the story was ultimately left unfinished, and Ren’s quest never reached a true conclusion. Despite this, The Pirates of Dark Water remains a celebrated show, even thirty-five years later.

Why Did The Pirates of Dark Water End?

I was absolutely blown away by The Pirates of Dark Water when it first came out! What really set it apart was the animation – it was so smooth and polished, way ahead of most other cartoons on Saturday mornings. And the story! It was surprisingly mature and complex for a kids’ show. Hanna Barbera really went all-in on this one, and it showed. They actually said it was their most expensive project ever when it initially aired as a mini-series. Can you believe each episode cost around half a million dollars to make? And they used a whopping 12,000 animation cels per episode – twice as many as most other animated series at the time! It was a truly ambitious show.

I remember when The Pirates of Dark Water first came out – it had a lot of funding behind it, but unfortunately, it didn’t really pan out financially. It’s a shame there’s never been a continuation of the story or even a fresh start. If you missed it, though, you can actually watch both seasons for free on Tubi – it follows Ren’s adventures aboard the ship called the Wraith. Seeing so many other older cartoons getting successful revivals, I wouldn’t be surprised if this Hanna-Barbera classic came back someday.

Why The Pirates of Dark Water Deserves a Reboot

With pirate-themed shows like One Piece gaining popularity on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, now is an ideal time to revisit The Pirates of Dark Water. The show could be successfully revived as a reboot, a continuation of the original story, or a combination of both, as many storylines were left unexplored during its initial two seasons. Although the original series didn’t last long enough to get a third season, it did inspire comics, a video game, and other related content.

I’m a huge fan of seeing classic cartoons make a comeback, and it’s clear it can be a massive win for studios – just look at how well the revivals of King of the Hill, The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, and Avatar: The Last Airbender have done! That’s why I’m so excited about the potential for The Pirates of Dark Water. It built such a beautiful, immersive ocean world, and I really think it deserves another chance, even after all these years – it’s been thirty-five since it first aired!
