The DC Universe is still finding its direction, and James Gunn and his team are prioritizing quality over quantity. They’re open to ideas from writers and directors – if a concept is strong, they’ll move forward with it. This is how projects like *Clayface* are being developed, but the universe also needs well-known characters to carry some of the weight. Superman, played by David Corenswet, will lead the first film, and he’ll face a tough challenge right away as he battles his classic foe, Lex Luthor.
Lex Luthor pushes Superman to his limits, causing massive damage to Metropolis and sparking a large conflict in Jarhanpur. However, despite his wealth and technology, Luthor simply can’t match Superman’s raw strength. Here are four DC characters who actually possess more strength than the Man of Steel.
4) Ultraman
For a while, Superman enjoyed a peaceful period in the DC Universe until he faced Ultraman, also known as the Hammer of Boravia. Lex Luthor managed to create a clone of Superman, but this new being lacked the original’s compassion. Ultraman became a destructive force, almost defeating Superman. Superman was only able to escape thanks to Krypto, who disrupted LuthorCorp and temporarily blinded Ultraman. However, by sending Ultraman into a black hole, Superman may have inadvertently created an even greater threat.
3) Supergirl
The movie *Superman* ends with a surprising reveal: Krypto isn’t Superman’s dog, but his cousin’s. During the film’s events, Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Supergirl), is out enjoying herself while he’s risking his life, but she definitely could have helped. A brief scene with Krypto at the Fortress of Solitude shows Supergirl is tough and can handle a fight. In fact, she probably has more experience and control over her powers than Superman, as she’s likely quick to confront anyone who challenges her.
2) Metamorpho
After surrendering to Lex Luthor, Superman likely expects a quick interrogation and release. However, Luthor has a different plan: he uses Metamorpho to trap Superman with Kryptonite. Metamorpho is incredibly versatile, able to form anything from rocket engines to massive mallets, but he doesn’t even need to use those powers. A small piece of Kryptonite is all it takes to hold Superman captive.
1) Eric Frankenstein
The first animated DCU project, *Creature Commandos*, features a number of impressively strong characters. However, the show’s most formidable villain isn’t one of the Creature Commandos themselves – it’s Eric Frankenstein, who relentlessly pursues The Bride. And when a fight breaks out, Frankenstein is a serious threat, overpowering opponents with incredible strength and resilience. He’s practically immortal, making him a challenge even for someone as powerful as Superman.
Superman is available on VOD.
