As a passionate Marvel movie enthusiast, I can confidently assert that no character embodies sheer strength quite like the Hulk does across all Marvel productions. Joining forces with Nick Fury early on, Bruce Banner’s alter ego swiftly proved indispensable to the Avengers team, dealing critical blows against Loki, including giving him a taste of his own mischief by flinging him around Stark Tower. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was once again Hulk who delivered the decisive strike against the titular villain before vanishing into space. However, in Avengers: Infinity War, we witness Hulk being humbled when Thanos delivers a crushing blow at the movie’s onset, serving as a stark reminder of his place among the cosmic forces at play.
After being defeated by the Mad Titan, Hulk’s dominance wanes as he teams up with Banner to form “Smart Hulk.” In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s been a while since we’ve seen the green giant cut loose, which has given other characters the opportunity to outmatch him in terms of strength. Here are four Marvel characters that are stronger than the Hulk in the MCU.
Following his defeat at the hands of Thanos, also known as the Mad Titan, Hulk’s supremacy takes a hit when he partners with Banner to create “Smart Hulk.” It has been some time since we’ve witnessed the rampaging green creature in the MCU, opening up opportunities for other characters to exceed him in power. Here are four Marvel characters that overpower the Hulk in the MCU.
1) Storm
Known as Storm, a prominent X-Men team member, Ororo Munroe dedicates numerous years to advocating for mutant rights alongside her fellow heroes. Under the guidance of Charles Xavier, her abilities significantly expand, eventually earning her the title of one of Earth’s most powerful mutants, categorized as “Omega-level.” Yet, Storm does not limit herself to protecting just one planet. Instead, she assumes the role of the Cosmic Voice, serving as the leader of the entire solar system.
Storm commands immense respect due to her virtually boundless potential, which allows her to harness her mutant powers and connect with magical realms and divine forces. At times, she even yields a power akin to Mjolnir. Compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Hulk who has faced various formidable opponents, he doesn’t fare well against beings capable of hurling lightning at him.
2) The Silver Surfer
As the herald for Galactus, the Silver Surfer possesses an unparalleled cosmic power – a force second to none within the Marvel Universe. Normally, this immense power serves the purpose of the Devourer of Worlds, eliminating threats to its objectives. The Hulk has had several encounters with the silvery-hued character, and not all have ended in his favor. In fact, during one battle, the Silver Surfer overpowers the Hulk, seizing control of his powers, rendering them ineffective.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Hulk hasn’t had an encounter with Silver Surfer yet, since he appears on Earth-828 instead of Earth-616 in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. However, it would be wise for him to avoid Shalla-Bal, given her exceptional speed and strength combination which could potentially overpower him.
3) Molecule Man
In a lab mishap, Owen Reece unexpectedly gains extraordinary capabilities. However, it’s later revealed that this incident was orchestrated by the Beyonder, who aimed to exploit Reece as a destructive weapon capable of annihilating the multiverse. Fortunately, the Beyonder’s scheme doesn’t succeed, and Owen, now known as Molecule Man, discovers he can control energy and reshape reality.
Despite seeming unlikely that the low-key Molecule Man could overpower the Hulk, they aren’t even competing in the same category of strength. With a simple gesture, Molecule Man can essentially erase the Hulk from existence. There are certain fights where the Hulk, or rather Bruce Banner’s alter ego, just isn’t prepared to engage.
4) Phil Coulson
As a cinephile reflecting on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I must express my gratitude that Phil Coulson, the character who orchestrated the Avengers’ assembly and enjoyed a tranquil vacation in Tahiti, didn’t follow his comic book counterpart’s perilous destiny. Tragically, Coulson met his end at Deadpool’s hands, but struck a pact with Mephisto, resurrecting him on Earth. Yet, this revival came at a cost – he was no longer the same man and embarked on a chilling quest to eliminate the Avengers from history. Alas, Coulson’s demise was not final; the Death Stone breathed life back into him once more in the MCU.
In his new role as the Grim Reaper, Coulson wields dark magic that should never be underestimated. His lethal touch, which he employs against foes, can inflict unbearable agony on them, making even survival seem unappealing. The Hulk is undeniably tough and able to endure heavy blows, but he won’t emerge victorious when facing an embodiment of death itself.
