Next week, on April 15th, a collection of four classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games will be available on Steam for PC. These games – two from the 80s and two from the 90s – aren’t coming to the Nintendo Switch or its successor through the eShop. Currently, they will only support Japanese language, and it’s unclear if English support will be added later, as Nintendo hasn’t announced any plans for it.
NihonGame is releasing a new collection for the NES called Hiryu no Ken Collection, featuring the four games in the Hiryu no Ken series: Hiryu no Ken, Hiryu no Ken II: Dragon no Tsubasa, Hiryu no Ken III: Gonin no Ryusenshi, and Hiryu no Ken: Special Fighting Wars. According to NihonGame, this collection consists of straightforward ports of the original games – they aren’t remasters, remakes, or even enhanced versions, just the classic NES titles as they were.
A 41-Year-Old Video Game Series
The fighting game series Hiryu no Ken first appeared in arcades back in 1985. Now, the original Japanese developers are bringing updated versions to new platforms. It’s likely this release is a way to gauge interest in a potential new game, though that’s just our guess.
The last game in the series, Hiryu no Ken Retsuden GB, was released for Game Boy Color a long time ago – back in 2000. That means the series has been on hold for 26 years! Given that it was never hugely popular, especially outside of Japan, it’s somewhat unexpected to see a new game, although it’s nice that the original creators are still involved.
It’s hard to say how popular the 2026 release of Hiryu no Ken will be, particularly since it only supports Japanese. This collection isn’t likely to attract new players, as it’s mostly for those who already enjoyed the games. And if it’s meant to evoke fond memories, it would have been better to include more language options to match how people remember playing them.
