Faces of Death does not have critics scared off so far.
Shudder’s new release is a remake of the 1978 horror film Faces of Death. The updated story follows a woman who works as a content moderator for a website and discovers disturbing videos that depict violent deaths from movies. The film stars Barbie Ferreira, known from Euphoria, alongside Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Charli XCX, Jermaine Fowler, and Aaron Holliday.
Early reviews are in for the new version of Faces of Death, and it’s currently scoring 60% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 10 reviews. We’ll have to wait and see what audiences think (the ‘Popcornmeter’ score is still to come), and more reviews could change the score either way.
This overall approval rating is based on a variety of opinions, ranging from very positive (like a 4 out of 5 or B+) to more neutral scores (around 2 out of 4 or 5 out of 10). For example, Graeme Guttmann from ScreenRant gave the film a 5 out of 10, describing it as “a well-directed horror thriller with too much on its mind.”
The movie Faces of Death comes out in theaters this Friday, April 10th. After that, we’ll have a better idea of how people are reacting to it.
If reviews are mostly positive, it could open the door for Shudder or another company to create a series based on Faces of Death. The original 1978 film spawned several follow-ups, including three official sequels and two that weren’t officially authorized.
The filmmaker also created the 1999 documentary Faces of Death: Fact or Fiction? Over time, the sequels began using increasingly graphic “real” footage, eventually becoming the popular found footage-style horror series it’s known as today.
While most of the original Faces of Death sequels went straight to video, this first remake from Shudder is getting a theatrical release. This gives a potential reboot franchise the chance to gauge audience reaction to a big-screen version of the series.
The new version of Faces of Death on Shudder is currently performing much better than the original 1978 film, which only received a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a promising start, but the movie’s success will ultimately depend on how well it does in theaters. We’ll know its true fate by the end of the weekend.
