Nintendo has a reputation for its exceptional game franchises. Many of the most recognized franchises in video gaming originate from Nintendo, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing. These franchises are considered among the best in the industry and have all emerged from a single brand. For the most part, these popular series continue to thrive or are set to release new games soon.
While not all Nintendo franchises remain active, some unfortunately slip into obscurity. For instance, Metroid has made a comeback, but there are others that seem lost to time and deserve another chance. Here are some overlooked favorites that could greatly benefit from a revival on the potential Nintendo Switch 2.
4. Yoshi’s Island
30 years ago, Yoshi’s Island stood out as an exceptional spin-off from the classic Mario series. Instead of having Mario and Luigi navigate through various levels, they were transported back to their early days, relying on a skilled Yoshi for assistance. To this day, it continues to exemplify the pinnacle of 2D platform gaming.
A follow-up to the Nintendo DS game wasn’t successful and the franchise has mostly remained idle since then. Yoshi, on the other hand, hasn’t been absent, but there hasn’t been a genuine new installment in the series since the 2006 DS title. It’s been a long silence, which is unfortunate.
Yoshi isn’t just well-liked by many, but his initial game still holds a special place in people’s hearts even today. A fresh installment in the series, delving deeper into the backstory of our cherished plumbers and their green dinosaur companion, would undoubtedly be warmly received at any point soon.
3. Star Fox
Star Fox’s most recent adventure wasn’t too far in the past; it was Star Fox Zero that debuted on the Nintendo Wii U in 2016. Unfortunately, this release didn’t fare well, sharing many of the same flaws as previous missteps for the series. The controls were heavily criticized, and the narrative received backlash for revisiting themes that had already been addressed in earlier games.
Because there’s been only one Star Fox game since 2006, which has had its fair share of criticism, it would be beneficial to introduce another chapter in the Star Fox saga. Many Nintendo gamers are familiar with the character primarily through Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and this could be an opportunity to reintroduce it in a full-fledged game. The potential upgraded power of the Switch 2 could also revitalize the series.
2. F-Zero
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but echo the sentiment that F-Zero is overdue for a return. It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a new installment in this legendary series; the last was on the Game Boy Advance, a device that now feels like a relic compared to today’s Nintendo hardware. Regrettably, many of us younger fans may not have even been introduced to this franchise, as it seems to have taken a backseat in Nintendo’s lineup since the mid-2000s.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve certainly come across Captain Falcon, primarily through the epic battles of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It’s been quite some time since we’ve had new content from the series that brought this exceptional character to life. Now more than ever, it feels like it’s about time for a fresh installment to re-emerge, shedding light once again on the world where Captain Falcon originates.
One potential solution for reviving the F-Zero franchise is to either overhaul its gameplay mechanics or create a new, more expansive driving game similar to Forza, akin to what Nintendo might offer. However, it’s important to note that the reason for this change is because the franchise has mainly been known as a racing series, with Mario Kart currently leading the pack and even Diddy Kong Racing trailing behind. The F-Zero IP needs a rejuvenation, one way or another.
1. Wii Games
It’s high time we breathe new life into the Wii series, a collection of remarkable games such as “Wii Sports”, “Resort” and “Wii Party”. While this wouldn’t be the exact same Wii anymore on the Switch 2, it’s clear that fans are eager for a comeback. Previously, Nintendo Switch Sports aimed to bring Wii Sports to the current console, but the outcome was less than ideal. However, this shouldn’t discourage them from trying again with a similar concept.
It’s evident that there’s demand for party games under the Nintendo brand that don’t feature their famous characters. For instance, Mario Party Jamboree is terrific, but it doesn’t get much better than playing Board Game Island on Wii Party. Moreover, there are currently few sports titles available on the Nintendo Switch consoles, and introducing a new one would help fill that gap. Lastly, a reboot of this franchise could bring Mii characters back into the spotlight, which might not be a bad thing for Nintendo.
