4 Things Paralives Already Does Better Than The Sims (& 1 Key Feature It’s Still Missing)

The life simulation game, Paralives, is now available in Early Access after a long wait! While the developers are still fixing some issues, the game has launched successfully. With its appealing visuals and fresh approach to storytelling, Paralives has the potential to be a serious competitor to The Sims. In some ways, it’s already performing as well as, or even better than, The Sims 4.

Like many fans of The Sims, I have mixed feelings about The Sims 4. It has a lot going for it, but it still has quite a few bugs after all this time. Plus, the constant cost of new expansion packs is a real issue, and Paralives has promised a different approach to updates. That’s why many of us are excited about having more life simulation games to play. While Paralives is still under development, it’s already doing a lot of things really well. However, there’s one key area where I’d like to see the game get even better.

4) Making It Clear If Your Para Is About to Burn Down the House While Cooking

In life simulation games like The Sims, accidentally setting your kitchen on fire while cooking is practically a tradition. Paralives definitely acknowledges this with its own cooking system. However, Paralives makes it easier to judge how risky a recipe is by organizing them based on cooking skill. While there aren’t as many recipes available in the Early Access version, you can clearly see which ones your Para can handle, and even get a percentage showing their chance of success. So, when I almost burned down the house making pesto? That was my own doing, and I appreciate that level of control!

3) More Control Over Wants & Goals

I’m really liking how goals and wants work in the Early Access version of Paralives. Instead of just appearing randomly, your characters develop desires based on their current emotions, and you get to choose from options that fit. This helps you create a more focused story and personality for each Para, which is a nice change from the sometimes unpredictable and strange whims of characters in The Sims. It does reduce some of the randomness, but I think it’s a great system and I’m looking forward to seeing how Paralives Studios develops it further.

2) In-Depth Personality Mapping and Level-Ups for Paras

When creating your characters (Paras) in the game, you’ll be able to customize them with initial skills and traits. As you play, you’ll also earn rewards that let you further develop your Para’s abilities and career. Unlike other games where promotions happen automatically, Paralives gives you points to spend on the perks you want. This means you can focus on building specific skills, strengthening relationships, or advancing your career – it’s up to you! Not everyone wants constant promotions, and this system lets you choose a different path.

1) Built-in Storytelling Structures

As a huge fan, I’m really excited about the Storyteller feature in Paralives! Basically, once a day you get to pick a card that can change things up for your Paras – maybe give them a boost of energy or help them with work. The cool thing is, the options you get depend on which Storyteller you picked at the start, so it feels really customized. And it’s not just that! There’s also a daily newspaper that tells you what’s happening around town. It makes the whole world feel more alive and gives you a reason to get your Para out and about, which really helps build a story. It’s still early days for these features, but I’m already loving the direction they’re taking!

But We Still Need A Sense of Whimsy & Play

I’m enjoying the current version of Paralives in Early Access, but it still has potential to improve. One thing I’m missing is the fun and playful feeling I’ve always loved in The Sims. The way interactions work right now – with a limited number of options appearing as a loading bar fills – makes the characters feel less lively and their connections less dynamic. They don’t quite feel like fully formed individuals yet, which makes the game world feel a little flat. While Paralives doesn’t need to be as chaotic as The Sims, it needs to develop its own unique charm to really stand out. Luckily, because it’s still in Early Access, there’s plenty of time to refine things based on player feedback.
