4 Years Later, Netflix’s Best Zombie Horror is Still a Brutal Masterclass (& It Can’t Return Quick Enough)

I’ve noticed Netflix has a lot of great horror shows, but one zombie series really stands out as exceptionally intense and well-done – it’s a true masterclass in the genre. There are plenty of other zombie shows out there, of course. You’ve got things like The Walking Dead and all its spin-offs, but even beyond that, shows like Z Nation, Black Summer, Daybreak, and iZombie have kept the undead shuffling across our screens for years.

Despite many zombie shows being made, Netflix’s All of Us Are Dead stands out as particularly intense and well-done. It cleverly combines the feel of a teen movie like The Breakfast Club with the thrilling horror of The Walking Dead, and is set during a zombie outbreak in a South Korean high school. What makes the show unique is its focus on the students’ experiences as they try to survive, and it doesn’t shy away from showing the brutal reality of the situation, even with young characters.

All of Us Are Dead’s Fusion of High School Drama and Zombie Horror Refreshed Both Genres

While Kim Byung-chul’s character, the science teacher Lee Byeong-chan, is important to the plot of All of Us Are Dead, the students are the heart of the show. The story mainly follows Lee Cheong-san, played by Yoon Chan-young, and Nam On-jo, played by Park Ji-hu, alongside a diverse group of classmates – including a former troublemaker, a student leader, a wealthy and well-known student, and a bully. Even without the zombies, this South Korean series would be a captivating teen drama.

Action horror films often focus more on excitement than genuine scares, but the Netflix series All of Us Are Dead shows that a fast-paced zombie story can also develop compelling characters. The show gives each main character a chance to stand out, avoiding simple stereotypes, which makes the surprising deaths even more impactful.

All of Us Are Dead’s Biggest Surprise Wasn’t Its Teen Cast

The young actors in All of Us Are Dead deliver strong performances, but what really stands out is how willing the show is to kill off characters. While The Walking Dead also had shocking deaths, it often protected certain characters for too long, even when it didn’t make sense, while sacrificing popular ones simply for effect. All of Us Are Dead doesn’t seem to have those same reservations.

Unlike some other shows, the deaths of characters in All of Us Are Dead feel truly shocking and heartbreaking, largely because the characters are so young. However, the delays in producing season 2 could weaken what made the show special. After four years, the original characters would no longer be believable as high school students. This makes it difficult for the show to recapture the same sense of danger and emotional impact it had in its first season, where the audience constantly saw students desperately trying to survive.
